Mrs Kenneth Macdonald and Mrs Arthur Grigg will be in town for the Canterbury Jockey Club's Meeting on Saturday. Mrs Macdonald will stay at "Hambleden," Bealey avenue, and Mrs A. Grigg at "Cashmere." Mrs 11. S. Batchelor has returned from a visit to Wanganui and Wellington. Mrs J. R. Wilford and her younger son are leaving for England by the Corinthic at the end of this month. Mrs H. Marsh and Miss Ngaio Marsh (Cashmere Hills) have returned from a six weeks' visit to the West Coast. Mr J. Caughley, who is attending the University Senate, is staying at St. Elmo. Mrs Zweibruick (Halcombe), who has been staying for some weeks with her mother, Mrs Bluett, Hewitt's road, has left for the north. The stall in aid of the Lewisham Public Hospital Fund will, to-morrow and Saturday, be in charge of Mrs Frank Grahaip, Mrs George Clarkson, and Mrs Cyril Ward. A specialty will be made of meat savouries, of which there will he a great variety, besides the usual stock of home-made cakes, poultry apd produce. , A reception, for members only will bo held on Monday, February 18th, at 7.30 p.m., at the Canterbury Women's Club, in honour of several members, including Mrs 11. T. J. Thacker, vicepresident, and Miss M. Spence, hon. treasurer, who have recently returned from abroad. Country visitors are already arriving in town in goodly numbers for the Canterbury Jockey Club's Summer Meet-

ing, which is to be held at Riecarton on Saturday. Added social interest will be given to this meeting by the attendance of the officers of H.M.S. Chatham, and lovers of horses are looking forward to Gloaming's reappearance at Riecarton, after an interval of nearly two years. As the committee of the Jockey Club has, for this occasion, reduced the- ladies' entrance fee to the grand stand enclosure to os, it is likely that there will be a preponderance of women at Saturday's gathering.

The monthly concert party arranged by Mrs R. Sierakowski journeyed to the Addlngton Reformatory on Saturday night. The duets and trios were greatly enjoyed. Other items were contributed by Miss R. Rings, Miss M. Johns, Miss Courtney and Mrs Ralph Sierakowski. Hie matron thanked the artists, and provided a dainty supper. Major and Mrs Johnson, whose daughter is to he married to jay, aro entertaining a large house-party at Mt. Torlesse. Miss Alix Kirk was hostess yesterday morning at yet another party given in honour of Miss Rita Matson. The private reception room at Ballantyne's, where Miss Kirk entertained her guests, was decorated with mauve and lemou sweet peas, and an original note was struck by the presentation, to each guest, of a pretty little Victorian posy of pastel tinted flowers. Hendry (Dunedin). Through the death of Mrs John Reid, of lildershe, North Otago has lost a gracious personality who was known far and wide for her generosity and truly Christian qualities. She was married in 1854, and with her husband shared the vicissitudes and excitement of life upon the goldfields at Bailarat, Epsom, and Mount Egerton. In 1863 they came to New Zealand, arriving at Dunedin, and 11 T? l a^°r they settled at Elderslie. Mr Reid passed away there in 1912, and his widow continued to reside there until her death. Eight members of a large family survive, these being Mrs T. C. Denn ison (London), Mr J. F. Reid (Burnside, North Mr J. B. Reid (Newmarket, Entrland}, Miss Reid (Elderslie), Mrs C. W. Gillies (Auckland), Mrs M. Stuart Holmes (Clover Hill Station, Hampden), Mr Stanley G. Reid COamaru), and Mr Douglas Reid (Elderslie).

At the "Rio Grande," Cashel street, Mr and Mrs G. R. Fail gave a very enjoyable evening party on Saturday, to celebrate the coining of age of their daughter, Ruby. About fifty guests wore present, among whom were Mr and Mrs T. Collins, Mr and Mrs L. Hodgkinson, Mr and Mrs W. Collin,gwood, Mr and Mrs Uet. Mr and Airs F. Taylor, Mrs D. Wright, Mrs Underwood (sen.), Misses Collins, Haynes, Bodle, Jury, Taylor (2), Wright, Fail, (4), Woods (2), Thomas,a,Bruce, Messrs Marquet, O'Connor, F. H. Stevenson, Sadler, Marriott, Chapman, Terrell, Scott, Sullivan, Underwood, Taylor, Cooke, Wilson, Ballantyne, Masters Fail (3). Musical items were given by Misses Bodle, Taylor, Mrs Ilet, Messrs O'Connor, Ballantyne, Chapman, ..Terrell, Scott, Sullivan. An exhibition of fancy dancing was given by Misses W. Fail and F. Taylor. Supper was daintily served in the dining-room, coloured hats and streamers adding the brightness of the Mr Conk toasted the guest of the evening, and Miss Fail suitably responded. SUNBEAM KINDERGARTEN,

The twelfth annual meeting of the committee of the Sunbeam Kindergarten was held recently, when Mrs H. T. J. Thacker presided, and the following members were, presentMesdames M. S. Brown, J. R, Evans, F. W. Freeman, J. S. Guthrie, M. L. Reading an<l A. Young. Apologies were received from Mesdames F. A'Court, H. S. Batchelor, C. Stringer, H. H. Wauchop, and Miss Allen. Before commencing the ordinary business, Mrs Evans explained that at the request of the Sunbeam Committee she had asked Mrs Thacker to occupy the position of president this year. Mrs Thacker had kindly consented and it was with the greatest pleasure that the members of the Sunbeam Committee now welcomed their new president. Mrs Thacker is a vice-president of the 'Kindergarton Association, and both she and Dr. Thacker have been keenly interested in the work from its inception. In acknowledging the honour, Mrs Thacker said it gave her great pleasure to be associated with a movement that was of such value to the community. The annual report and balance-sheet were read and received. In the report reference was made to the good work done during the past year by the committee, staff and parents. The balance sheet showed that the receipts for the year were £lO7, and 1 expenses £B3 10s, leaving a credit balance of £24 8s 7d, wliich sum had been added to the teachers' salaries. Of the £3O balance in the Post Office at the beginning of the year, £27 had been drawn to meet expenses in connexion with the extension, leaving a balance of £3. |

Regret was expressed at the resignation of Mrs F. Rutherford, who is leaving for the North Island. A special vote of thanks was passed to Mrs H. S. Batchelor for the good work she had done during the year. Miss Gorrie reported that the names of 20 children had been deleted from the 101 l and 15 fresh names added. The usual harvest festival will be held in the third week in March. The next meeting will be held on the second Wednesday in March.
