FIRES.
A MELBOURNE BLAZE. (BY CABLE—PBZSS ASSOCIATION COPYRIGHT.) (ATTSTBALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received January 31st, 9.50 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 31. A fire in hardware chambers in Elizabeth street gutted the top two floors, occupied by Morris, Aarons, and Sons, boot warehousemen. Other floors.were badly damaged by water. The damage" is estimated at £50,000. • In the early morning the caretaker was awakened by his dog jumping on the bed and barking furiously. Calling his wife and son, he managed to reach the ground floor almost blinded by smoke. He broke open the front door, and gave the alarm. . There was a large quantity of explosives on the ground and first floors, and the firemen, after a strenuous fight, confined the outbreak to the top floors, preventing a serious explosion.
