SENATE IN UPROAR

AMERICAN OIL SCANDAL. ATTEMPT TO INVOLVE PRESIDENT. (ST CABLE— PJIE33 ASSOCIATION COrTRtOSST.) (AUSTRALIAN AND K.2. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) WASHINGTON, January 20. Tho scandal concerning the sale of naval leases of oi! lands is rapidly developing into so partisan and acrimonious a question as to stop all other legislative business. Senator Caraway ha 3 daringly endeavoured to draw President Cbolidge into the affair, declaring. that Mr Coolidge was a member of tho lato President Harding's Cabinet, which approved of tho leases. Tho affairs of the Navy are in the meantime being • hauled ovor tho coals in the Houao of Representatives, which threatens to summon Mr Edwin Denby (Secretary of tho Navy) to explain tho alleged diversion of oil royalties. Tho Sonato is in continual uproar over the attacks upon tho Administration, notably resolutions doinanding the resignations of Mr Denby and Mr H. M. Dougherty (Attorney-General). It is indicated that President Coolidga inclines to support tho acts of his Cabinet, but Senators plainly hint that this may necessitate several impeachment proceedings. Nevertheless, Mr Denby ■is apparently unmoved, stating: "I did tho right thing in granting tho loose, and I would do the same thing to-mor-row. I havo.no intention, of resigning."
