On March 4th, 1824, at a "Public Meeting of Noblemen, Gentlemen, Merchants, and others held at the City of London Tavern," there was founded the Royal . National Lifeboat Institution, now . recognised as- one • of the noblest organisations in the 'world, and the model of the lifeboat services of all countries with maritime interests. ..The centenary of the institution is close at hand, and arrangements are being completed for its fitting celebration. An effort will be made to reproduce, as far as possible, the features which characterised the original meeting held nearly 100 years ago.
