WESTLAND A. AND P. SHOW.

CANTERBURY SUCCESSES. (special to "the PESSS.'I HOKITIKA, January 29. The nineteenth annual of tho Westland A. and P. Association, which is being held on the Hokitika racecourse, was opened to-day in \mpropitious weather. The heavy rain showers which fell intermittently during the day, coupled with the fact that People's Day falls to-morrow, militated against a largo attendance, hut nevertheless much interest was displayed by local farmers. Visitors were present from North and South of Hokitika, together with a large contingent from Canterbury. The weather conditions interfered with the judging to sonic extent, with a result that some classes will have to be concluded to-morrow. The sporting competitions set down for decision will serve to add interest to tlic function. Though local exhibitors did not come forward in such numbers as on previous occasions, a large Canterbury and Nelson entry served to demonstrate the great progress which may be made by scientific breeding. The Canterbury stock v.*as a revelation .to Westland farmers who, it must 'be confessed, have paid too little attention to the raising of the best animals. The various classes for horses did not fill out in the manner anticipated, a reason giren bciing Jhat farmers are too busy at present, to give the necessary attention to prize animals, but the catt'.e classes filled excellently, although, as was anticipated, the local stock was outclassed by the entry from Canterbury.

In the Shorthorn section tho certificate and ribbon for champion bull went to Mr W. J. Jenkins's Fair Caesar, by Fair Silver Prince from Crystal Lady Georgina, and tho award for champion heifer was won by Mr Robert Peach, of Ashley Bank, with Our Favourite, by Diamonds' Echo from Mademoiselle Favourite ll.' The general nature of the exhibits in this section was pronounced good, but unfortunately the local stock exhibited generally fell short of show quality. This comment was also true of the Ayrshire section, a dry cow exhibited by tho Sea view Mental Hospital being the poorest of a good lot. The judges' comments in tho other sections were withheld until the conclusion of the judging in the cattle classes. Champion bull in the Ayrshire section was Maesgwvn Matchlight, owned by Mr C. Morgan Williams, and champion cow, Mr John Parlane's Gowan Bank Joy. In the Jersey section, the champion cow was Creamy, owned by Mr J. Fleming, Lower Kokatahi, while the champion Fric* aian bull was Mr J. McAnulty'a Abbo King Segis, and champion cow, Mr T. H, Over* ton's Milkmaid ' Patch, by Eding of Netherland from Milkmaid Ist of Netherland. There was a somewhat poor entry of sheep and pigs. In the classes for dogs the judge selected a setter dog exhibited by Mr W. Holley, Hokitika, as being the best in the show. A kelpie slut, shown by Mr F. C. Marshall, Lower Kokatahi, was also*pronounced a very fine animal The following were the judges—Horses, Mr J. Hagan, Wakefield; cattle and sheep, Mr H. R. Green, Palmerston North; pigs, Mr J. Steer, Greymouth; dogs, Mr W. E. Williams, Hokitika; dairy and farm produce, Mr W. R. Kettle, • Greymouth; home cookery, Mr H. IS. Nightingale, Hokitika. The following were the prize w.nners;— .
