FARMERS' UNION.

GREYMOCTII, January 29.

At-a meeting of the Grey Yalley Branch of the Farmers' Union'held in the Ikamatua Schoolroom, Mr A. Bradley presided. Feeling reference was made to the services of the late Mr Cam Perkins, who was recently drowned near the State Farm.

The secretary vriis instructed to write to the district traffic manager of railways objecting to the freight of rate and a-third on all trucks of timber, such as posts and stakes. It was stated that the freight on a truck of posts sent by Mr G. McEnroe to Waipara was £io, which was considered exorbitant. It was also decided to ask that the Friday evening train from Grevmouth .be delayed until 5.30, thus giving country people more time in the town.

The secretary was instructedto write to Mr Dalgleish, fields instructor, asking him to arrange with Mr A: E. Stephens, of the Chilian Nitrate Compuny, to give a lecture at Ikamatua. It was decided to draw the attention of the Inangahua County Council to the state'of the culverts from the end of the Blackwater road to Mr A. Leggoe's, also the plates of the Blackwater bridge. The opening ceremony of the Carcw Memorial School has been fixed for Sunday, February 17th, and the Archbishop of Melbourne, 'Dr. D. Maiuiix, has accepted an invitation to bless and open the building. Miss ■ Violet Scrimshaw (Christchurch) lias been appointed domestic science instructress at the Gieymouth Technical College.

Mr James Valiance, late of Ivokiri, died Jit the Grey River Hospital yesterday. Deceased was. well known as one of the early goldminers. He was a native of Scotland and 83 years of age. Mr A. Rae, formerly a member of the Australian Federal Senate, arrived in Greymouth to-day from Christcliurch; " Sheep from the South. The small steamer Elsie arrived at Hokitika this morning from Okarito, bringing a cargo of 201 ewes and lambs, a proportion of which are for the Addington market. She also brought a few bales of wool. It is estimated that , the number of fat lambs coming forward from the district between' Okarito and Hokitika this year is double that of last year, when the number was estimated at 1500.
