Chief-Detective T. Boddam find Mr W. Burton (of "Wellington) are at present the guests of Mr and Mrs H. J. Chapman (Hampstead). General Newa. An Ashburton schoolboy named Thomas Bradfrod fell while playing on Thursday, dislocating an elbow. Ho is in the County Hospital, doing' well. While the condition - of Mr J. B. Swanson, the railway fireman, is, generally speaking, much the same as lit was on Thursday, there were signs yesterday morning of a slight improvement.

A motor-car overturned at a waterrace on the Soafield-Chertsey road about three miles from Chertsey, on Thursday, but any further particulars concerning the accident are unknown to the police, who have not yet been able to locate the owner. Yesterday morning the car, a Ford, was lying on its side in the water-race close to the fence. Whether anybody was injured it is at present impossible to state. In response to the Mayor's request to close shops at noon to-day instead of 1 o'clock, in view of the band fete, all the principal business people of the town have' signified their intention of closing at the earlier hour.

Magistrate's Court. A sitting of the Magistrate's Court ■was. held yesterday before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M. Judgment by default was given for plaintiff in Farmers' Co-op., Ltd., v. T. H. Addis, £l4 14s, and costs £3 3s Gd. Leslie Howard Bailey, charged with drunkenness, was convicted and fined 10s and costs, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. Archibald John Templaman was charged with allegedly exposing liquor for sale ; in a no-license district. Mr W. J. Craeroft Wilson appeared for defendant, and Senior-Sergeant D. Jackson for the police. , In giving his decision, the Magistrate said that all liquor cases were surrounded with the same unfortunato aspect. Thoy simply reeked of perjury. He did not believe defendant's evidence nor the witness who supported him, and so far as the was concerned, he thought that his evidence was a little too good. He was not satisfied that there was sufficient evidence to convict, therefore the charge would be dismissed.

The Apiary Inspector proceeded against Patrick Prendergast, Longbeach, on two charges, one of failing to apply to the Horticultural Division for registration, and- one of keeping his bees in other than properly-constructed frames. Jamea Prendergast was also charged with keeping bees in other than properly constructed frames. The first defendant was convicted on both charges, and fined 20a and costs on one, while the second was convicted and fined l€s. Mail Notices.
