PROTECTION.
TO THE KDITOa. OF "THE TBE3S." Sir,—Re the letter in your paper by W. H. Saxby, in which he advocate Freetrade, I agree with him that Freetrade is the fundamental principle of the great British Empire. There is one question of difference, and that is the unit of value; whether it is three meals a day or only one meal a day, a Chinese basis of value. Now as a Freetrader, how can W. H. Saxby reconcile his Freetrade doctrine with a gold monopoly? That is, we accept a paper currency forced upon us by expediency; notes payable not in the town of issue but somewhere else. Where is the Freetrade he indicates when we have a monopoly in one product—gold? Where is the equality of opportunity or Freetrade which W. H. Saxby advocates? What we do want 13 Freetrade on a true basic wage for all workers, not a value based on one product only.—Yours,, etc., JOHN WELD.
