The first Hawke Cup challenge match of tho season was commenced to-day, in beautiful weather. The wicket was fast and the outfield keen. Manawatu ' batted first and scored 171 (Grant 33, Pegden not out 23, Harrison 28, Rose 18, Hodder IG, Aim 12). Holland took 5 wickets for 72 runs, Tronson 2 for 37, Treadwell 1 for 8. Wanganui failed with the bat, being dismissed for 120. London gave a bright display for 44. Other rungetters were, Orton 20, Williams not out 14, Orr 16. McVicar secured 5 wickets for 25, Grant 2 for 26, Hope 2 for 33. When stumps were drawn for the day Manawatu had lost 6 wickets for 85 (Grant 31. Hodder IG, Pegden 10, McVicar not out 10).
