Firs. The second lira within a few weeks occurred in London street at an. early hour this morning. While on his beat shortly after midnight, Constablo E. A. Irwin noticed smoke coming from the rear of a shop and dwelling occupied by Mrs Harking, fruiterer and confectioner, The alarm was given, and within three minutes a full muster of the brigade was in attendance. The fire had started in the basement of the building and the flames ran up the match-lining of the outer wall. The outbreak was quickly subdued, but not before considerable damage had been done to the contents from water. The building is owned by Mr J. Pitcaithly and is insured in the Royal Exchange office. The Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday accepted the tender of Messrs Cowans, Sheldon and Co., of £9086 10s, for the delivery of 25 electric capstans at Lyttelton, free of all charges.
