SELWYN. Tiie monthly meeting of the SclTryn County Council was held on Monday. IVosciit —iloesrs K. J. Andrew (chairman), W. Gilmour, T. E. Peareon, G. Hall, W. Stones B. M. Izard, 0. High*. R. H. Johnston, And 2s. J. Erown.

Tiie secretary of the' Now Zealand Society of .Civil Engineers wrote asking that every facility be granted the County engineer to attend the annual conference, to be held in Dunedin on February 13th. The engineer was granted permission to attend. It was deckled to call tenders for the riglxl to cut cocksfoot on the public tenders to be in by the 19th inst. The Canterbury Progress League wrote asking for a contribution towards the advertising campaign in connexion with the British Eimpire exhibition, for the province of Canterbury. It was decided to hold the matter ovetr until further information was secured. The clerk presented information in regard to by-laws, which are being prepared to regulate -heavy traffic. Foreman Andrews recommended that the space between the main and small bridges (Ellesmere bridge) be asphalted, also that the surface of the bridge be tarred. Cr. Free was opposed to doing any tarring until after March, when the heavy traffic would be stopped. This view was supported. Mr J. Penny wrote stating that his races had nearly all been cleaned, and compared favourably with others. Caretaker' Glassey said that Mr Penny's raceß needed attention in some places, and it was necessary that they all be cleaned. The caretaker waa instructed to take 6teps to ensure that all races are cleaned.

' Mr B. Howson, of Messrs Howson Biros., Sedgemere, waited on the Couilcil, asking that the cleaning of creeks he attended to without delay in his locality. Since he had token down a guard fence the cattle had knocked the embankment into the drain. The clerk produced copies of lettcirs to landowners requesting • them to clean the .drain from Forsyth's pipes to Taumutu culvert. Sir Howson condemned the method of alleged cleaning of the drains by cutters - attached to a motor-boat. Tho engineer was instructed to make an inspection, and if the conditions were as Mr Howson had stated, that steps be- taken to clear the creeks effectively..
