TRENTHAM BURSARIES

- - FURTHER DISTRIBUTIONS. A meeting of the trtistees • of the Trentham Scholarship Fund was held at Wellington last week.' It was decided to renew 79 existing bursaries (amounting to £-105), and to grant 53 additional applications (amounting to £1600), making a total distribution of £3705. Children resident in New Zealand eligible to make application for assistance are, firstly, those of soldiers and nurses who died on active service while serving with the Expeditionary Forces; secondly, those children (resident in New Zealand) of soldiers and nurses who wefe wholly or partially disabled as the result oi military service w*ni the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces; thirdly, children (resident iu New Zealand) of soldiers and nurses who were on active service with tue New Zealand Forces: and, last m order .of priority, children of soldiers s.nd nurses who served as members;'of the Forces of the British Empire, and who are now resident in New Zealand. The chairman stated that he wished to acknowledge publicly the great assistance they were receivin~ from the education authorities throughout New Zealand, up to and including the universities. The bursaries are therefore intended as an aid to the-ipain-tenance and training as citizens of the bursars when tliPv arc: (a) Attending any public or private secondary school; (b) attending any technical school; (c) attending ahy university collegey agricultural college, or other professional . s°hool recognised by the University of New .Zealand; (d; apprenticed to: .any trade; or-(e) are otherwise working at. any calling approved by the trustees. No children- borii after July Ist, 1920, are eligible for a bursary. The bursaries commence not earlier than January Ist in the year following the date on which the applicant reaches the age of fourteen years, or the date on which the applicant obtains the sixth standard, proficiency, or - competency certificate. New Zealand code, whichever date is earlier.. • At the present time there are students attending various night; schools, technical colleges, boys f and girls' high schools, colleges; and several universities, including the Canterbury .University School of Engineering. In addition, the trustees of the : fund have .subsidised several boys who.-are engaged in learning skilled trades, aud the trustees state that it will certainly be necessary for them to take some steps in the near future to augment their funds, if they are to continue the work they are engaged in.
