The Pacific Cable Board's steamer, H.M.C.S. Iris, took in. a ' large quantity of cable from the Post and Telegraph store yesterday, and proceeded to Cook Strait this morning ix> repair a break in is 0.. 1 cable. ■Tho steamer has just returned from a smart repair job to the WellingtonSydney cable, which was discovered to be damaged two hundred miles west ol Wellington. Tb,o work . was completed in tweutv hours, which was considered very ci\.di tabic, as the cable was picked up tour hundred fathoms lx-low the surface.
