A POPULAR TEACHER. (SKECIAI. TO "THE PBIS».") GBEYMOUTH, September 7. A meeting was held to decide how fittingly to farewell Mr J. F. Wilson on the occasion of his departure at the end of the month for New Brighton, ■""here he has been appointed to the charge of the school. Among societies represented were Trinity Institute, the • West Coast Rugby Union, various football clubs, Greymouth Athletic and Cycling Association, W.E.A., the Greymouth Boxing Association, the "West Coast Tennis Association, the West Coast Competitions Society, various Debating Clubs, the N.Z.E.1., Chautauqua Committee, the Greymouth Okl Boys' Association, and the Greymouth Fire Brigade. The Mayor (Mr W. H. Parfitt) was present as representative of the citizens. A committee was formed to decide upon the nature of the presentation (which will include an illuminated address), and it was decided to present the gifts at a civic send-off to be held in the town hall towards the end of the month. Other organisations including Trinity Club and the Greymouth Boxing Association will hold separate functions, while the | West Coast Competitions Society inI tends to hold a banquet in honour of Mr Wilson, who is secretary of the Society. General News. Good progress is being made with boring operations at Taylorville. It is j expected that coal will be struck in about two months' time at a depth of 900 feet. The bore has so far been sunk 500 ft. The inspector of nuisances (says the Westport "News"), who proceeded against a number of stock owners yesterday was more than justified in obtaining a conviction against the man whose calf was found standing alongside the inspector's cow, which was tethered in the street, and which the calf had sucked dry. Nominations closed yesterday for the vacancy on the Hokitika Borough Council caused by the retirement of Mr D. J. Evans. Two nominations were received —Messrs D. J. Evans and A. G. Pilkington. A poll will take place on Thursday. Personal. It is understood that the GovernorGeneral will be paying a farewell visit to Westland during the summer months prior to his return to England at the close of his official term. Messrs M. Quinlan and Harry MeKeowen will leave by to-morrow's express for Christchurch. They will represent tihe local branch of the Hibernian Society at the golden jubilee of the Christchurch branch. The Greyr mouth Marist Brothers' Choir will provide tflio music at the • golden jubilee communion mass at the cathedral on j Sunday. I Quick Despatch. Quick loading work was carried out on the Greymouth wharf last night. The Opua arrived from New Plymouth at 5.15 o'clock to load coal for Tarakohe. As the or,der was urgent, no time was lost in beginning the work of loading her. Two cranes were used, j and a full load of about 350 tons was' in the holds in time.to allow her to sail for Tarakohe at 11.40 p.m. Bewanui Dispute Settled. Tho top mine at Eewanui resumed work to-day, the trouble regarding the employment of truckers being settled at a union meeting last evening.
