UNITED CLUB. ! ANNUAL MEETING. j The annual meeting of the United Bowl- J ing Club was held last night, Dr. Marks j presiding over a small attendance. j The annual report congratulated the cMi \ on th» success of the past season. The winners of the various club competitions held throughout the year were as follows: Champion Singles, H. Roberta; Double*, Freeman and Atkinson; Rinks, Haynes, Collins, Lillington and Bilclifi; Handicap Singles, Tompkins; Progressive Doubles, Settle and Lillington. The membership of the club at the close of tho past season was 62, and showed promise of being increased in the near future. Winter bowls had been instituted, but had been marred to a largo extent by the inclemency of the weather. Although the club had not reached the final stages oi the A. ajid B. Pennants, it got as far as the semi-finals in both, being defeated by email margins. Three of the four teams entered by the club for the Ke» Year Doubles Tournament qualified in their section, the final being won by Dr. Marks and D. McKenzie, with A. Torrance and G. BilolifE as runners-up. The Eaater Tournament was won by H. Roberts, C. Hill, D. McKenzie and Dr. Marks. The club was represented at the Nelson Easter Tournament, but was not successful in winning any trophy. During the season Mr Seager had resigned as gTeen superintendent, the resignation being accepted with regret. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of JS6 Is 4d. The report and balance sheet were adopted. It was decided to writ© to Mr J. Ellif*. accepting his resignation with regret, tad expressing appreciation of his services ca behalf of the club. With reference to a letter forwarded by the Centre asking for the opinion of the olub as to tho Pennant system of play, the chairman reported that the committee had gone Into tho matter and recommended that 6t four-rink championship should be played la future, each olub to be represented by a team of four rinks, provided a win bo decided on the aggregate points. Tho chairman Baid 'he was opposed to the Pennant system as it meant that it _ wa a practically impossible for club competition to be played off, players being engaged in) Pennant competitions every Saturday. Mr D. McKenzie said he was of the opinion that the olub should not interfere in the matter at all, but leave it to the Centre. The Pennant system had been in a state ot chaos on more than one occasion last sev son, owing to many clubs defaulting. On the motion of Mr T. J. Bettle, it was decided to instruct the delegate to the Centre that the club favoured the committee's .recommendation, but did not bind him to support the proposal. "Whatever system was* to be adopted, however, the club was of tho opinion that the competition should bo decided on points. The election of officers resulted aa follows: —Vice-president, Mr D. McKenzie; hon. secretary, Mr T. J. Bettle: general committee, Messrs G. Bilcliff, P. M. Brown, Gr. Freeman, T.
