OBITUARY.

MR JOHN McARTHXm. Mr John McArthur, who died at Invercargili on Sunday, left Scotland in 1554, after the death of his father, and sailed in the Knoen Valley, which was wrecked off Cape Northumberland, near the Glenelg river, South Australia. His uncle, Mr William Swan, of the Nangeela Station, rescued the survivors. Mr McArthur and his brothers then worked, for a number of years on Mr Avail's other station, Kanongwootong, and later the throe brothers took over the Nareen Station, Victoria. In 1876 lie came to New Zealand and managed Mr Reid's property at Ashburton. After managing the St. James's Station, Hanmer Springs, Mr McArthur became part-owner of it with his brother Duncan, in 1881. Some years later, Mr Duncan McArthur went to Australia, and the station was entirely owned by Mr John McArthur. In 1890, while at St. James's, he married .Miss Jeanie McArthur (who, however, did not belong to the same family), aim in i'buo no si lifted to St. Helen's fetation, and managed it in conjunction with his own property. In the samo year lie sold St. James's and bought "Ardno" Station, in Southland. Tha Lumsden Hills Station was also bought, by him, and worked in partnership with his son, Mr J. D. McArthur. Up till 1918 he lived on his property, but lie then cut it up, and liad since been living a retired life in Invercargili, where he died. Mr McArthur leaves his wife, a son,, and two unmarried daughters. A large number of people, including representatives of the families of most North Canterbury settlors, attend, li Mr McArthur's funeral, which left St. Mary's Vicarage, Addington, for tlio Addington Cemetery at '2 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Rutherford, Mr and. Mrs J. Taylor, Mr and Mrs Angus, Mr and Mrs H. Acton-Adams, Mr and Mrs A. Ferguson. Mr John William Bell, who recently retired from the Public Service, died at his residence, Muritai, Wellington, on Monday. The deceased, who was 59 years of age, was born in Invercargili, and it was there that he entered the Public Service. A good many years since he was transferred to, Wellington, where, until his retirement a few months ago, he held the position of accountant in the head office of the Department of Agriculture. He was actively connected with church work, having been churchwarden in the parishes of Brooklyn and Eastbourne.
