Davey, of the Union Company's steamer Tofua, reports that at ten o'clock on the morning of July Ist he sighted a dense column of ateam rising 90 to 100 feet out of the ocean, nineteen milps north-west of Nukualofa. Previously the vicinity was always a pale green patch. Now the sea is bubbling two feet high, an d the steam is visible at a distance of twenty miles. . , •- An earthquake occurred at lofa the previous day. It is estimated that the area the steam is rising from is half a mile in extrmt.
