TIMABU. Social and Personal. Mrs W. Elrnslie (Dee street) is the guest of Mrs Dillon Bell (Shag "Vallev). Mrs Hope and Mr 3 Ormsby ("Tumanako") have returned from a short visit to Christchurch, Mrs Wade, who was the guest of Mrsc Rogers (Le Cren's terrace) left yesterday for Invercargill. Miss Dorothy Cray (Seaview terrace) went down to Dunedin yesterday. There has been an increase in the number of bankruptcies in Timaru for the first half of 1923, compared with "-he same period last year. From January to June of this year eight people have had to file, while up to June of last year tho local Deputy Official Assignee had to deal with only five petitions. Ail Elusive Team. Quite a crowd assembled at the Timaru railway station yesterday to see the Maori footballers arrive and proceed to their hotel. The train pulled in and the people craned their necks this way and that, but saw nothing. The train steamed out again, and still there was not a sign of a Maori anywhere. But as the crowd began to disperse they realised that the footballers had quietly walked along to the northern end of the platform, and were making for their hotel by way of Strathallan street, an excellent little exposition of working the blind side. Plunket Society. At the monthly meeting of the Timaru branch of the Plunket Society, there were present Mrs Cray (in the chair), Mesdames Raymond, Paterson, C. Holdgate, Thomson, Mason, Hay, Jones, Webster, Bell, Priest, Stinson, and Cave, and Miss Cray. The nurse's report showed 29 new casos for the month of June. A total of 525 visits had been paid to homes, 309 adults and babies had visited the office, and 25 visits had been made to the Fairlie office by mothers and babies and 16 to Albury. A vote of thanks was passed to the Borough Council for its courteous reception of the deputation regarding the rest-room, and also for tho improvements carried out to date. As the Government has increased the grant to the. Plunket Society throughout New Zealand, Fairlie hopes Boon to have its own nurse. A collection was taken up in the room to provide a doll which the nurses require for demonstrating, bathing, dressing, etc. Rugby Union. At the weekly meeting of the South Canterbury Rugby Union there were ! present Messrs J. Harley (chairman), J. B. Crowley,. M. Houlihan, V. J. Aspinall, H, Eraser, and J. McKeague. A letter was received from the secretary of the Geraldine Sports Association regarding the proposed seven-a-side tournament to bo held at Geraldine. Tho Geraldine club's delegate, Mr J. O'Leary, waited on tho committee and placed Geraldine 'a views on tho matter before it. After discussion it was decided that September Ist was the only date open at present. The Otago Union wrote suggesting August 16th as the date for the junior representative match, Otago v. South Canterbury. It was decided to confirm the date. Timaru Gun Club. Thero was a good attendance at the week-end shoot of the Timaru Gun Club held at Saltwater Creek. Mr P. Stevens won the opening event, a novice match of seven birds, first prize a silver cup presented by the president; second prize, silver cigarette case, presented by Mr A. B. Annand. Mr J. A. Campbell secured second place with six kills. Tho second event was a ten-bird handicap sweepstake, carrying a two-guinea trophy, scores count ing for the challenge cup. The following each shot nine birds and divided the prize-money:—W. J. McCulloch, T Tresise, W. O. Long, and J. A. Camp bell. Tho shoot-off for the. challenge cup and trophy was won by W. J. McCulloch. A final match, first miss outwas won by E. E. Mclllwrick on the eighth bird. Port of Timaru. Shipping movements at the Port of Timaru will be found in the shipping columns. General News. The Timaru Borough Council has decided to appeal against the decision of Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., in giving judgment for plaintiff (Mr Boulton, oi' Wanganui) for articles alleged to have been lost from the bathing-sheds 111 Caroline Bay during the swimming championships. At Monday night's meeting of thr Timaru Borough Council, Councillor Shirtcliff stated that tho business of the electric light department was going on so satisfactorily that he conI fidently expected that it would be possible, within the next few months, to give electric light to consumers in Timaru at a reduction on the present charges. Messrs J. W. Souter and E. Porter called a meeting of Tetailers on Monday to consider a suggestion to close for a couple of hours to-day on tht; occasion of the football match between the Maori representative team and the South Canterbury representatives.
