SUMNER BURGESSES' ASSOCIATION.

The regular meeting of the Sumner Burgesses' Association was held in the Council Chambers on Saturday evening,, the Rev. "VV. MnAra presiding over a good attendance.

J. Barr briefly thanked the Association for its kind expressions, and congratulated the Mnyor-Elect, Mr W. H. Nicholson, on his success at the recent poll. Mr Nicholson suitably lepJied. .

Mr McAra,,. on behalf of the Asßciation, also offered its congratulations to the councillors who had been re-ekcCed, and wished tbem a successful period of office. Mr H. C. Jones replied on behalf of his colleagues. A deputation fiom the Estuary Improvement Coimniittee was then received, Mr W. J. Franklin introducing the members, speaking for the Power Bott Clubs 1 of Christchurch

and New Brighton, ho emphasised the need for an improved entrance at the Sumner bar. Mr Hawker, of New Brighton, also supported tho proposal, and drew attention to tho progress reo»ntlv made in Wellington, where some thousands were being spent on improvements- for the power and Bailing boat clubs. .

At the London Bankruptcy Court recently the publio examination was held of Shurmer - Llewellyn Wilfred • Sibthorp, described as of Norwich House, Southampton street, W.C., financier It was stated that since 1913 he had been concerned in attempts to collect on. behalf of a Russian the amount—about_ £4,600,000 in English moDey, j-of which he was to receive ono-tenth"— of a promissory note. The note, Mr Sibthprp • said, was one of a series'of three, and bore the signature of Prince Yamagata, the representative of the Japanese Government. To prosecute -the claim he had found £15,000 to £20,000, and had received from a group, of which the petitioning creditor was one, ,£6OOO. with which he had been able to go to Russia and keep a representative in Switzerland. In 1920 he advanced a certain company £12,000, which he had made from his * "Devonshire House" deal. The examination was adjourned.
