VICTORY MEMORIAL SCHOOL FAIR.

. ♦ An optimist, indeed, was he who, up to noon on Saturday, would have foretold a Bueeesaful result to any open-air function. But such was the outcome of the Fair held in the grounds of the Victory Memorial School on Saturday afternoon and evening, in' aid of the shelter sheds and maintenance fund of the School, the very substantial sum of £156 being realised. The Pair was opened punctually at 2 p.m.. by his Grace Archbishop Julius, and thereafter the well-stocked stalls and various side-shows and competitions did excellent business, although the attendance of the public was not as large as had been expected, due, no doubt, to the uncertainty of the weather until after 2 p.m. Incidentally, the Tair showed what a large share in. the sympathy of people generally, the interests of children and their schools have. The committee in charge of the Fair have received gifts in money and "kind" from all classes of people, and from a great many business houses, notwithstanding the many appeals to the public purse whioh have beon made lately. The excellent organisation was due to the hon. secretary, Mr C. H. Clibbom. Archbishop Julius, in formally opening the Fair, said that one could not help being struck with the number of appeals that had been made to the public of late. The method of raising money was not ideal, but there did not seem to be any better way. He thought that the financial result should be very satisfactory, as it was for such a laudable object as the Vietory School. The educating of the children in Church schools was a very important work, and it was showing its worth and being appreciated. The Victory School had met a long-felt want, principally among Church people, ,ar previous to its erection there had only been Church secondary schools, which catered for the people who could afford them. Voluntary labour had brought' the school into existence, and that sacrifice would have to»-be supported by further efforts in order to maintain the. institution. The Archbishop appealed to all Church people to support the schools and orphanages, and he congratulated all those who had worked on the: excellent showing the Fair, made. t ■ The executive of the Fair Tvaa composed of:—(Chairman), Rev.
