NURSES' HOURS OF WORK.
TO Till EDITOR 0? "THE MtESS." Sir, —After reading in your columns that the Government is making it compulsory for hospital nurses and sisters to have one day off only a week, please ask the Government to inquire into St. Helens Training School for iNuises in the different centres in New Zealand. Jhese nurses are on duty night and day there. A girl goes into one ot tiiese training schools to learn to be a nudwifeiy nurse, not a slave. At the end of her. term she is weak and done with overwork. Fair play is bonnie play. Let these nurses have eight-hour duty the same as in the public hospitals in New Zealand. It can be done by engaging more trainees and some housemaids to do the work (the nurses are doing this at present as well as nurse the sick). This would enable the St. Helens nurses to give their best to their patients and devote more time to their studies. The public general hospital nurse works eighl hours. Therefore she has eight hours work, eight hours sleep, and eight hours play, and is not by any means overworked.— Yours, etc.,A NURSE.
