THE CANTERBURY COLLEGE JUBILEE.
to the iDrroa of "the pbesb." Sir, —The approaching jubilee of Canterbury College has set me »tliiiiking. In vie* of the appeal which is being made by Christ's College Board of Governors for their Collegiate and Upper Department, I am trying to recan tne part that the Board ot Governors piayed in tlie lounuation of Canterbury College. My memory is not quae wnat it was, but if 1 reiuenioer rigutly tne original cauieroury College Board were composed greatly of members of Gurist's College .board. That would have been natural anyway, as they were the men in the province who up to that time had been concerned in secondary education. Members of their staff, I think, also provided a fair share of the first lecturers at Canterbury College. I have a distinct recollection, further, that at the founding of Canterbury College, Christ's College was formally affiliated with Canterbury College. This being so, I am hoping that Christ's College will be given a fitting place in the jubilee celebration. The ideals of the founders of education in the province have not worked out always on the lines thought of fifty and seventy years ago. But experience seems to be showing us thttb those ideals were pre-eminently sound, and Canterbury College, or the future University of Canterbury, will only be enhanced by the existence of affiliated colleges, established and conducted by the several religious bodies or groups of religious bodies in the community. It would be very fitting that St. Andrew's College should' develop a Collegiate Department, as well as a Grammar School Department for the Presbyterian Church, affiliated with the University, and other religious bodies might do likewise. So only do we believe will the highest type # of College life : which is the heritage of the British race, be preserved in the younger portions of the Empire. The appeal of Christ's College Board of Governors is an attempt, and a very opportune one we cannot but think, to revive an {deal, and we trust it will not be lost sight of in the coming celebrations. —Yours, etc., RANDOLPH.
