The hiph price of coke in Great Britain has stimulated the development of high-eliiciency coke ovens. One large British company has brought into use a new battery of fifty coke ovens capable of dealing with 12,000 tons o coal per month. The ovens are of the regenerative type, and are worked in conjunction with a very complete system of slant for the recovery of valuable by-products, such as tar, sulphate of ammonia (wfiicli is used as a fertiliser), and crude benzol. Eventually it is intended to distil the tar, so that creosote, naphthalene, pitch, and other products will be added to the list. The output of the plant per month -will be about 7000 tons of coke, 400 tons oT crude tar, 120 tons of sulphate of ammonia, and 20,000 gallons of crude benzol. The Research Committee of the British Institution of Heating and Ventilating Engineers is now engaged upon investigating many of the difficult problems connected with efficient (ventilation. A special committee is studying the possibilities of standardisation in design and construction of ventilating fans. This Institution, which has' nearly 600 members, includes practicalIv all the leading heating and (ventilating experts in Great Britain, and is very actively engaged in raising tho scientific standard of heating and ventilating work.
