SPORTING.

Nominations for the principal events at tlio Auckland Racing Club's Great Nurlljei-n Steeplechase Meeting close i"-morrow at o p.m. The races iire "*., c Great Northern Hurdles oi J'.iOO euvs, the Great Northern iSteeplecliaso of 2500 sovs, the Winter SteeplecW>> olM(XK) sovs, Hio Cornwall Handicap of ]ou7 sovs, King George HanffToaj) of 850 sovs, and tho i ork Handicap of 850 bo vs. Although tho two principal races at the Amberloy J'ftcing Club's annual meeting liavo dwindled down consideriiblv. they are >ti)l of two-dividend proportions, and the minor events niore than atone for their shortcomings. The fourteen left in the _ Novice iSt«ke*> should provide a very interesting race, wlulo tho Open Welter lias drawn an acceptance of fifteen. Providing Red Gown and Clean Sweep are started in tho hurdles, tliey will add interest, to that race, for their good form on '.he flat is well known. It lias become superfluous to say that the light harness events will hare a larec number oi competitors, and there is little doubt they will provide the biewst fields of "the day. The meeting promises to be hiorlily succesMiM. and the enclosures at Uirc.irton next Saturday should te well filled V- the patrons of tlii.s popular country club; An endeavour is to be made to secure an extra day's racing at Trentham and a day's trotting at I'ctono during Wellington's welcome week in next -Tune. The "boost" committee has decided to send a representative deputation to the Prime -Minister in j an endeavour to secure the necessary permission. j la liis roview of the yearling sales, j 'Toviotdale" bad tho following concerning imputation and his stock:— ''Ail'' of tho Imputations were well j reared, and are each one of them ! stamped in the likeness of their sire. I Ho ihmself was by no means a big one, I vou remember, but lie was good, and | Jie could stay. Ho is bcautiiuily bred, | too, being by Martian, perhaps tho i most consistent getter of long-distance horses in Australasia, aud from Stepfoldt, by Nordenfoldt, out of Steppe, L'.y Saunterer, out of Hermit's dam. J. wish he stood somewhere nearer the centres of civilisation." Bonnie Winkie is galloping well on the tracks, arid from reports received Jie should strip a much better horse when next seen 'out—probably at the I)uncdin Winter Meeting—than he was at ilicearton. At the latter fixture he wus obviously not at his best, and it was surprising that iie received such good support on the totansator ill each his races. Refrigeration has been turned out and will not race again until the spring. As a four-year-old this • lilly should prove useful, as she looks n typo that would improve with age. 'That horses have good memories is evidenced by tlio two-year-old Attractive. Consequent on injuries received earlier in tho season during shunting operations while being railed homo from a meeting, ho now steadfastly refuses to go near a horse-box. An j oifort was made again to entrain him for'taio recent Manawatu Meeting, but it was useless, so he was walked from Wanganui to Palinerston North by oasy stages, a distance of about fifty miles. Conflicting reports are being received concerning the injury to Dainty tjtep, but it is agreed that she was not destroyed,, as was first reported. Although she may not race again, | there is every chance, that she will lie available for stud duties. A Melbourne writer recently indulged in some comparisons between the Koueral arrangements at' Flemingtoii und at itandwick. Points noted in favour of ITlomington were that the numbers of tho three placed horses were hoisted above tho judge's box. instead of that of only the winner, as at Uandwick; and that at Flemington .horses could be seen walking about the birdcage, whereas at llandwick they could only b'o viewed in their stalls before a mcc. For liandwick it was mentioned that iho course is compact and convenient ; tho betting ring admirable, not being productive of congestion near tho rails of the official stand; Injured horses receive special attention; and that more comfort attended getting a light, luncheon—and with, greater variety—than at Flemington. In Germany the Government is making a move towards stopping tlie publication of French racing news in German papers-. -It is proposed to bar French racing reports, tips, etc., and i'or a breach of tho Act—if it passes—a fine of up to 1,000,000 marks may be impoued. In Melbourne last week the Victorian ponies Golden Glove (14.2) and Gold Kit (12.3) met in their match raoa at Ascot for £SOO aside put tip by tho respective owners, D. McNamara and J. Nicholson. By the novelty conditions under which they raced, Gold Kit traversed 4J furlongs, while Golden Glove had to cover 4j furlongs and 70 yards. Gold Kit's 70 yards start being accounted for by the fact that she received 10 yards for each inoh she was shorter than her opponent. Each pony carried 8.12, and Golden Glove went out favourite at slight odda on. Golden Glove, however • failed •to repeat her Sydney niatch Buccess, and was beaten by five lengths in 58 3-ss. Gold Kit, who is a daughter of Gold Brew and Kitten, was ridden by E. Hamilton. At the Easter yearling sales Demosthenes registered one of the best averages. Me had only four representatives, but they were sold for an aggregate of 4000 guineas. Comedy King, with four for 4210 guineas, was the only one with, a really better average.

A num'ber of liorscs were galloped | oil it, but very few were doing their best. Fa'brinade was given a. sprint over a short I oourse with a welter weight up., but was not doing his best. The last three furlongs took . 43 2-58. Harlequin ran the last three furlongs of his work in 44 2-ss, and Hinoamaru, who has joined F. D. Jones's team, was given, steady pacing. Wanda and Gameooek finished together well clear of Votiflt at the end of half a-ir.ile, run in 52 8-6 a, Gamecock being the winner. Pluto was too good for Vespucci over half a-mile a.t even weights in C2s. Heathoofce was givon a working gallop. Orioot and The ReaveT were sent filve furlongs together at even woights. They finished abreast, in lm 7b, but The Heaver was going much better than Oricot, who did not appear to relish the going. Distant Shot pulled hard while carrying a welter weight over three furlongs, run in 38 l-sa. Jazz was going bettor than Moorland at the end of five furlongs run in lm 9 l-ss_ SharpbuTst was ridden out to run five furlongs in lm 7 2-ss. Some Kid was given a strong working gallop over six furlongs. Sainum, who wn« carrying a welter weight, took lm 8 3-5s to run five furlongs, and did not look capable of doing much better. Telamon and Pitprop sot out to jump the pony hurdles together. Telamon fenced' well, but Pitprop lost his rider at the first fence, and was not persevered with. Urgency, with a featherweight up, an<s brought home by Prcspority over the last I five, ran seven furlongs all out in lm 3i 1 3-59. ! Tiff was ridden out by a very light boy to I run half a-mile in 51 3-ss, and appeared to handle the going well. FalstafF and Lord Nagar were given a working gallop together. Both geldings are improving in condition. Barmaid, who was .carrying a lightweight, sprinted six furlongs in lm 22 l-ss, audi oould not have done any better. ■Paddington Green jumped well 1 while being sohooled at a slow pace over four flights of hiw-dlos, and Mn.storhand shaped "better than Telamon and Uodi Gown in a, bout over four flights of hurdles. Ardour v.'a® under a. strong pull while running sis furlongs in lm Ms, a distance that Cerberus ran comfortably in lm, 31 8-ss. Will Oakland was under a strong pull while running five .furlongs wish Finora and another in lm 9s. Finora did not appeal' to handle the heavy going at all well. Sunny Loch, who revelled in the mud, waa much too good for The Cheat over five furlongs in lm 7s, and Wink was going better than Palestrina at the end of a gallop over six furlongs in lm: 20 4-ss. Palestrina had a, much bigger weight up than . her stablwnatc. Panmure, who has been leased by Sir George Clifford, has arrived from Palmerstoir North, and has gone to 8 tony hurst. Acceptances for tha Forbury Park T.C.'s Winter Meeting close to-morrow at 5 p.m. The Annual Meeting of the Methven Trotting Club mil he held to-day on the Mt. Holding Racecourse, Mathven, and the fixture promises to be a successful one. There will be a train at R-akaia to meat the Christchurch express, .and it will connect vith the southern train journey on its return, thus' enabling local patrons of the sport to arrive hack in Christchurch. by 7.80 p.m. The thi'ce-year-old trotter Audominion has been lakes ir. hand again by D. Bennett The son of Great Audubon has benefited by tho let up, and is in nioa condition to resume work. Peter Mac ia training on the right way at Belfast, and will contest the principal races at Forbury Park. He ivill probably be driven by A. Buttcrfield 1 . "Tatsy Dillon ie an unlikely starter in the Princa of Wales Handicap at Forbury Park. T. G. Fox is keeping Guy Fawkee and Doliy Dillon in strong woik at Addmgion. llie first-named will contest the Kowai Trot Handicap at the Amberleiy R.C.'s Annual Meeting," and Dolly Dillon will he seen out at Forbury Park. Three of Mr D. Rogers's team, in Pinevale, Bing Boy, mid Fireman, have left W. Brvce's stable, a-nd in future will bo trained 'by G. S. Wallace in the 3011 th. The Addington mentor E. Carlyon is handling a promising three-year-oldl filly by Great 'from Mconshine, dam of Persuader. Dahiahi.ie i 3 doing well in his work at Irvington Lodge, and will form one of B. Jardon's team to race at Dunedin. The H-irold Dillon mare Camille, at ono time trained in Cant-pjbury, is now in vroiik at Alexandra Pa.rl; under the care of G. Phipps. the ex-Australian owner-trainer. P. Riddle leaves for Australia, early next month. He will be absent from New Zealand for a few months, but will return in t-ima to assist at the spring fixtures in the north. Worthy Bingen, winner of the Eden Trot Handicap at the Auckland T.-O 'a Autumn Meeting on Tuesday, is a five-veax-old trctter by the American-bred sire Nelson BingMi, from Bertha Bell (imp.). He is owned jninSy by the local sportsman Mr Morgan O'Brien and the Oamaru studmaster Mr J. O'Buien. Worthy Bingen was owned and educated b{? Sir C. James, who disposed of him a few months ago to his present owners at a eubstantial wad this marked his first suc©ess in » r&ce. Temerity, who finished third:, is locally owned The oon of Petereta, was expected to run well, and by finishing in a placo ifully justified the confidence placed in ihim. From 48yds behind Reliance scored a comfortable 'win in the Mangere Handicap. The Gold Bell gelding was wotfeing well prior to the meeting, uid his sucoass wae freely an(C<m£iiwe<L st foot of wort. column.)

ticipaited. Florrie Bingen, a reoent addition to J. Shaw's team at Auckland, and) La Meriel, a winner at Wanganui, finished second and third respectively. Minton Derby has evidently made a, complete recovery irom the cold he oontracted at the conclusion of the Auckland T.C.'s Summer Meeting, as the Auokland Trotting Cup winner easily disposed of eight others in the Campbell Handicap, in 4m 43 2-ss, which, considering the state of the track, Y.-afi a gooci poiformanco. Steel 8011, who is now getting up in years, bent all but the winner, while Dean Dillon filled third place. Ivy Audubon waa supported her connexions to win the Factor Handicap; The daughter of Great Audubon and Ivy _ Dean was always well pl-uoed, and won easily at the finish. The winner is ai half-brother to Dean Dillon, Granger, and Peter Dean, and is more than useful. Pyramus trotted a good race into oecond. place, whilo another ex-Australian, Buz Buz, finished! third close up. W. Orange, who has not met with much suoccsb this season, scored an overdue win 1 ir\ Hobson Handicap with the Brent ( Loc-inda gelding Brendo. In the past Brendo waa regarded moro as a sprinter than _ ft stayer, but appears to have improved with age, and stayed out the mile and a half in his'best stylo. The Oakhampton Dodge representative Ratana finished second, but Fancy Boy and) Roy do Oi'o, owned and trained in Canterbury, were never prominent, and finished! amongst the unplaced division. Tha sipeedy All Bell was seen in a favourable light in the Cornwall Handicap, and won nicely froan the three-year-old Bonny Log&n, who still keops up her reputation for consistency. All Bell is a brother to Nita Bell, and he is endowed with & I'aro turn of speed, but is somewhat deficient in stamina. Pyramus made amends for hei' defoit in the Faster Handicap by annexing the Stewards' Trot Handicap. Some few weeks ago the daughter of P eri Huon was acquired by Dr. Itaynor, of Auckland, who appears to hnvo made a fairly good speculation. Aerial Bingen was set to give tho winner 86yd®, buo .found tho task beyond his ability, although he finished close up second. Heather Girl, with the crack Wa-ijcoto horseman R. A. McMillan ia the saddle, was backed! down to a shout price in the Marconi Handicap. The result wasi never in doubt, and the mare won comfortably froim Mouiiu Albert and Gold Sound, two of tho limit division. B.ex Coronndo and Blair Audubon had plenty of admirers, but failed to race up to expectation. OWNERS' AND BREEDERS' ASSOCIATION. A special general meeting of members of the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association was lield on Tuesday, Mr J. W. Trist presiding over a good attendance. As a mark of esteem in which tlhe late Mr R. McMillan, a vice-president of the Association, was held tfiose present stood in silence. 'The chairman said that he felt sure tho members of tho f rocognise the loss the sport of tro» K sustained by Mr McMillan's untimely death. At a previous mooting the e«cret«ry nad been instrr.cted to a, copy of the relating to tho d'ltiea of stipendiary stewards. This had been dor.e, their duties being set out in Rule 97 of tha New Zealand Bales ot Trotting. . Aftev several sligiit aiterations had been made, tho Association'? ravised rules were adopted, and the members of the sub-com-mittee, consisting of Messrs J. . Trist, E. L. McrCeon, and R. J* Munro, were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their services. In view of the increasing business and tha number of meetings, it was decided to advertise for suitable rooms for the Association. Mr Trist brought up the question of handicajps. He stated that the committee intended to go fully into the matter, aiter which, he hope<i, eomo concrete suggestions would 't>s brought- down. A abort discussion ensued regarding thn handicapping of maiden horses. Mr R. J. Munro ate ted that he had Lad a conversation with Mr H. Brinlcnian, one of the local handicappera, and lie had expressed his willingness to fall an lino with the wishes of the Association. On a. vote being put to the meeting it wa-8 unanimously decided that tho secretary writo to Ifr H. Brinkman asking that n!l maiden horses be placed on tthe limit in the future.
