♦ MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Council tf Cliristian Congregations met last evening, tho Ven. Archdeacon P. B. Haggitt presiding over a large attendance of delegates and members. The Rev. John Paterson reported that suitable extracts from the report of tho Government Commission with reference to venereal disease had been selected with a view to their publi-

oation and dissemination among the various congregations. On his motion it was decided to publish 6000 copies of the oxtracts, the cost of publication to be raised by subscription. The chairman naked those present to give every assistance to Dr. Armstrong Smith, who is visiting Christchurch in connexion with the "Save the Children" Fund. Mr Prank Thompson , and Mr J. C. Prudhoe were appointed to represent the Council at a conference to be held on May 7th to discuss social discipline among children. The R-ev. John Paterson brought up the matter of unifying street collections, moving that the Council should express its approval of the proposal to unify the various appeals on behalf of chanty, and pfyilanthropio organisations in the city, and should recommend

its favourable consideration to the organisations concerned. The speaker pointed out that under the present system many people only gave small trams on account of the frequency of street appeals, and many gave nothing, excusing themselves on tiie ground tnat they were always being asked for donations. In Broken Hill,' when the speaker , was stationed there, a joint appeal had proved very successful, and it had been stated that the system had worked very , satisfactorily in the United Stitea. 1 The Rev. O. K. Perry supported the motion but pointed out that there would be a certain amount of opposition to the proposal from organisations which preferred to /onduct their own appeals. The motion was carried with one dissentient.
