Mr Hughes has published the text of the Notes interchanged between the United States and Japan, by which the countries mutually agree to the cancellation of the Lansing-Ishii agreement.

The Notes point out that, in the light of the .understanding rfrrived at at the Washington Conference, the former agreement is no longer in force. Tho cancellation, however, leaves intact the Boot-Takahira understanding of 1906, in which Japan and the United States declared it was their purpose to maintain the status quo in tha Pacific, to assert equal rights for all Powers in China, and to support the ind'ependonce and integrity of that Power,
