SUMNER PEACE MEMORIAL.

♦ A meeting of the Sumner Peace Memorial Committee was- hold in the Council Chambers last night, the Bev. W. McAra presiding over a full attendance. ' Correspondence was read from the Borough Council, slating that it approved of the -plan of the proposod memorial, and that it 'granted authority to carry out the work, the Council to co-operate in tho proposal.

The names of Messrs C. M. Eoswell and H. J. Marriner were added to the committee It was agreed that tho roll of ratepayers he scrutinised, with a view to interviewing sonio of the leading citizens with regard to subscriptions.

The following canvassers were appointed:—Clifton, Messrs Langton and Eoswell; Council Chambers ■ block and Grafton street, and Esplanade to tram bridge, Mr T. B. Boulton; Stoke street to. Colenso street, Messrs C. Benjamin and H. Buttle; Grafton street, Nayland street, and Esplanade, Messrs H. C. Jamioson and P. C. Cooper; Stoke street to Hardwicke street, Messrs G. A. Alexander and H. C. Jones; Hardwicke street to Euston street, Messrs J. C. Macdonald and A.J. T. Withers; Euston to Head street, Messrs Douglas Smith and J. C. Wilson; Head street to Heberden avenue, Mr C. I. Denham; Scarborough, Messrs V. E. Hamilton and A. Pullan; Arnold to Queon streots, Messrs J. Illingworth and C. T. Middleton; Queen street to Heberden avenue, Messrs T. E. Whitfield and A. Cheshire.

It was resolved that Mr W. H. Nich"olson and Bev. W. McAra wait upon the Redcliffs Burgesses' Association on Saturday evening, to make arrangements for their eo-operation in the Peace Memorial.

Tlio treasurer reported that donations to date amounted to £4B Bs, of which £ll Cs had been received. It was resolved that names o£ subscribe™ obtained previous to the issue of subscription lists be entered on each list, and that a clock be erected to show the amount of the subscriptions received.

The Hon. J. Barr tabled samples of Bluff granite to be used for the names of the battle areas, and also stone offered by Mr Langdalo for the pillars. He stated that Mr Langdale had offered to assist witli tho quarrying.

It was decided that Mr Barr should inspect the local stone, and decide upon its suitability or otherwise. The following sub-committee was appointed to act with the Borough Council in carrying out the work Messrs H. C. Jamieson, \V. Henley, J. Barr, and T. B. Boulton.

It was agreed that the work should be put in hand at once, aud that tin committee should report to the next meeting on the extra cost to build larger pillars.
