MISLEADING STATEMENT. i. —— : (SPECIAL to "the fsess.") - GREYMOUTH, March 1. With reference to Mr Moses Ayrton's statement at the Methodist Conference, that "In Eunanga there were 300 miners and no religious instruction was being given to adults or children," the following telegram has been sent to the secretary of the Conference: —"Mr Ayrton's statement regarding Eunanga absolutely false. The Anglican Church and the Presbyterian Church, and the Salvation Army conduct Sunday schools and services. Please read to Conference, and correct through Press. —Signed, Carr, Archdeacon; Farnell, Anglican; Cuttle,. Presbyterian; Lamberton, Salvation 'Army." About a Bull. Reserved judgment was given by Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., in the case heard by him at Hokitika recently, in which P. C. Marshall claimed £lO5 damages from Jane Baird, for the loss of a bull. Plaintiff alleged two alterna-. tive clauses: (1) that the defendant negligently allowed her bull to trespass on the plaintiff's land, and injure plaintiff's bull to such an 'extent that plaintiff's bull had to be destroyed, and (2) that defendant, well knowing that her bull was "mischievous, '' and was likely to injure plaintiff 's bull, allowed the .bull to trespass on plaintiff's land. The case' occupied 10J hours, mainly in legal argument. The Magistrate declared that plaintiff had prove that defendant's bull was mischievous, or that defendant knew it to be _ mischievous, or that it caused the accident to plaintiff's bull. Judgment would 'be for the defendant with costs, £l6 4s. Security for appeal was fixed at £36 4s. Notice of appeal has been given. Personal. Mr J. B. Auld, of Crushington, has been elected an Associate Member of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers. Mr Auld has been on the staff of the Keep-it-Dark Mine, Reefton, for over 20 years. : Rainfall Record. Rain fell at Greymouth on 21 out of 28 days in February, the total fall registered being 7.29 inches. The maximum fall was 1.21 inches on February 18th.
