ARTESIAN WELLS.
TO THE EDITOB O? "THZ PSESB."' Sir,—Bef erring to J.L.W.'s letter in yoiw issue of February 28th, it is not my intention to reply estimating the number of artesian -wells extant, but merely to endorse his statement of the first output of .artesian water taking Place at the Phoenix Brewery in the vicinity of the Normal School, and that one of the first wells sunk here was oy lekson on my father's property, then known as Scottsburn, but now named Finglas, Papanui. ' Th ? inking of the well in front of the City Hotel reminds me thsit great excitement was caused by a reported discovery of gold thero. Crowds assembled, but it transpired they had been cleverly hoaxed by Mr John 01livier, who, in collusion with the wellsinker, lekson, had cast some copper or brass fittings into the well. —Yours etc., I. I. THOMSON. Opawa.
