LIFE-SAVING.

CANTERBURY CENTRE. • The Canterbury Head Oentre of the Royal Life Savitig Society met last evening, Mi B.' K. Baaeett presiding. ■ Tile City Council- wrote authorising the society to bold the Sir John Hall Shield, competition at the .Tepid Baths oil March: 2Bth, and die Monica 'i'hacker Shield) competition'on'.March 29th. The Dominion Executive wrote stating that an effort was being made to piace the secretariat of the executive on a more satisfactory basis, and enquiring whether the Head Centre woh prepared to bear its share of the expense. It was decided that the ,Bead Centre agree to the proposals of the* 1 Dominion Executive. Bt was decided to recommend the Dominion Executive that applications be calledl for the position of secretary,. Head' Centres to be circularised for this purpose. With respect to the offer of the Dominion Executive to supply elementary certificates free to Head Centres prepared to distribute them free, ii was decided that, owing to the Centre having made _its arrangements for the season, and having a large number of elementary . certificates it had paid, it could make no change this season. It was decided to 'support the suggestion of the Dominion Executive that the N.Z.A.S.A. should put a 220 yds breast-stroke ( event on its championship programme for ladies. It was also decided to recommend to j£he Dominion Executive that it should defray the cost of' the medals for the event. Mr F. Collins presented a report covering the surf championship in Timaru. It was decided that Mr Collins _he thanked for his service, and that thanks Be accorded also to the judges and other officials. Consideration of- the report of • the conference of Head Centres waa deferred till the next meeting. Messrs Atkinson, Bamford, Wyn Irwin, Allen and Bryant were appointed jydges for the sohools competitions, Mr Bassett marshal, and Mr Collins examiner. On tie motion of Mr Atkinson, it-was decided to recommend the Dominion Executive that it seek a conference with the Council of the . N.Z.A.S.A., with a view to the N.Z.A.S.A. taking over the control ol life-saving work in New Zealand. Mefisrs Atkinson and Batchelor were appointed a deputation to wait on the Dominion Executive in connexion with the matter. Awards were granted as follow:—Proficient certificates—B. W. Flewellyn and _C. H. McPhail (St. Albans School), J. D. Paul (North Beach- Surf Club). Bronze medallion—A. B. Truscott and J. D. Paul (North Beach Surf Clu'b). Honorary instructor's certificate—E. W. , Mallascil (North Beach Surf Club). It waa also reported that the following awards had been issued since the last" meeting:—Proficiency certificates —W. P. Sutherland, H. G. Smith, E. C. Heard, E. J. Ward, R. H. Ellis. Bronze medallion —E. A. Chivera, W. P. Sutherland H. G. Smith, E. C. Heard, E. J. Ward and B. H. Ellie. SUMNER CLUB. A meeting of tho Sumner Life-saving Society was held last night when final arrangements were made for the club sports on Saturday next. Mr J. C. Macdonald presided. It was decided that all events should be post entry, and open to financial members only. In the one-man event, it was resolved that each competitor should provide a Subject, but the choice would be left to the judge's decision. * The chairman stated that the tide would ba perfect and that keen contests were expected. It was agreed that tLs trophies should be presented to. the winners at the club' 3 annual dance, to be held at a later date. The following officials were. appointed: Judges, Messrs S. K. Bassett and G. F. Allen; timekeepers, Messrs 8.. Wallace and P. Dick: staxter, Mr T. Newburgh; handicapper, Mr J. Browne. The programme adopted was as follows: — Besuscitation comoetition, 50yds back-stroke without the use of hands, ladies' 50t3s brea3t stroke, one-man rescue, dive off pier, scouts' race, 100 yds breast-stroke. It was decided that the aggregate points of the resuscitation and one-man rescue count for the Newburgh cup.
