CANTERBURY MARKETS.

Friday Evening. 1 Business is practically lifeless, and little movement may be expected until after the holidays. Australian demand for oats is easier, due to beneficial rains in New South Wales. Quotations as a Tesult are 2d per bushel less from Sydney than they were a fortnight ago. At country station values here are "nominally 2s 6d for B gradi. In any case the Australian market is not calculated to increase prices, but only to provide an outlet. Good bright heavy oaten chaff is meeting «"ith a fair demand, and good quality is worth from £3 10s to £3 15s, at country stations. . . There is an entire absence of business in new season's wheat. The trade generally considers that the carry-over o£ milling wheat will be small, notwithstanding reports to the contrary, but harvest prospects have been so improved by the recent weather that sn increased yield is anticipated from North 'and Mid-Canterbury. One opinion is to the effect that early values will bo about 5s a bushel, but that after the first demand is filled there wili be an easing. Other views incline to the belief that the Will not, all round, be as good as last year, and that there will be little Surplus to depress prices. Fowl wheat in the meantime is selling at 4s 6d to 4s 7d per bushel, f.0.b., s.i. . There has been an enquiry or two about barley. A good deal has been grown under cohtract a,t 4s 6d (continuance carried), and this woula appear to sot that figure as a minimum price for free barley. There is no change to report m seeds. Forward business in potatoes is negligible. The area in crop is understood to be large, and the crops are coming on well. The weather is conducive to blig'it, but 'it is at least six weeks too soon to expeci blig-ht to any extent. About £3 5s at country, statious is the nominal quotation for . main crop. , The following are quotations for produce ' to be paid to farmers at country stations, free of commission, sacks extra, except where otherwise sfated• ' Milling Wheat (maximum pricea)—According to Government prices: Tuscan, 5s 10id, f.0.b.; Hunter's, 6s ljd; Pearl, 6a 7id. DUNEDIN, December 22. Although the holiday season is having its effect on the volume of business, there is a good demand for A Gartons, which are quoted at 2s Bd, and B's at 2s 5d per bushel, sacks extra. ' As a result of the brisk demand and the scarcity of good quality lines, the market for first-class chaff is firm.
