BOROUGH COUNCILS

AKAROA. The Akaroa Borough Council met on Wednesday. Present —The Mayor (Mr F. K. Davis), Org. H. J. Barnham, H. W. WUkins, 0. Stewart, A. J. Faithfull, Ot Wi Leetß, and F. Wilson. Leave of absence was granted to Crs. W. C. Pool and Dlgby Smith. . The Department of Labour wrote stating that, in the event of the local business people failing to agree, to the' proposed change, tlio weekly naif-holiday would remain as at present. ... The Government Auditor wrote pointing out that amounts over the statutory limit had been paid to Crs. Leote, Faithfull, and* Smith in connexion with business done by the Council. Cr. Wilkins stated that Cr. Leete had simply acted as an agent in receiving the amount,. and that Crs. Faithfull and Smith had carried out specially urgent work that otherwise would have had to be sent to Ohristchurch. It was resolved to place thiß information before the editor. The Council went into committee to consider 19 applications for the position of town clerk. On resuming the Mayor reported that Mr P. G. Riches, at present act-ing-town clerk, had been appointed. Cr. Stewart said the town clerk in Akaroa had been in the habit of receiving all requests fot permission to light fires in the borough, ana of acting also as inspector of public buildings. In every town in New Zealand that he himself had visited he had found these duties undertaken by the superintendent of the Fire Brigade. He thought , the same should hold good in Akaroa. It was decided to enquire further into the matter. The finance report showed receipts £59 19s Id, Peninsula Patriotic Society's loan dr. £SOO, War Memorial Society's loan dr. £3OO, antecedent liability £1199 14s 4d, District Fund Account cr. £59 5s 4d, Borough Loan Improvement-Account cr. £375 15s 4a. Accounts for payment £lB4 18s Bd. Cr. Leste urged that efforts shoilld be made to have the French Squadron visit the harbour. ■ On the motion Cr. Barnham it was decided to write the Minister fqj* Defence, asking that Akaroa's claims to Va visit should be considered. The matter of leasing the Council's reserves at Dromore was referred to the Rei serves Committee for a report in a month's I time. 1 On the Mayor's motion is was agreed that the Council office be closed from December 2End until January 17th.
