MAGISTERIAL. WEDNESDAY. (Before Mr F. H. Christian, J.P.) DRUNKENNESS. Two first offenders were -each fined 10s in default 48 hours' imprisonment. Another was fined 7a in default 24 hours' imprisonment. IN OTHER PLACES. THE TANGNEY CASE. (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, November 8. After a tearing extending over foua; days, the trial of Maurice Tangmsy cm a charge of attempting to obtain, the sum of £SOO from Detective Tongue by means of falsa pretence, came to a olose at the Supreme Court to-day. Mr Justice Reed, in summing up, expressed his regret at the length of the case, whicli should have lasted only a quarter of the time. It was the duty of the police to protect tho people against themselves, and against such people as the prisoner, who, by means of an advertisement ia the newspapers, had attempted to catch the email man's mon«y. After an hour's deliberation, the jury returned a verdict of guilty, and the prisoner was remanded until Friday for sentence. On hearing the verdict, prisoner exclaimed: "1 appeal against the conviction."

DUNEDLN, November 8. In the Supremo Court, Hugh Alexander Forbes was found" guilty of attempted carnal knowledge of a girl twelve years old. He was remanded for sentence. * Arthur Ernest Ede, charged with indecent assault, pleaded guilty to common assault, and the plea was accepted. He was remanded for sentence. Alfred Joseph Yanoe Ryan, charged wiTa false pretences, pleaded guilty and waa ad'mitted to probation for two years on the condition that he should go to Boto Ro& Island. Albert Norton, a Wf-caate Moon, was acquitted oa ft charge of stealing a watch chain and modal. The Chief Justice remarked: "It is very fortunate for him that he has been tried by you, gwnitlemeni."
