An echo of the interest in the round-the-mountain roadraoe was. heard in the .New Plymouth Magistrate's Court, when a member of the committee which controlled the event was prosecuted for conducting a sweepstake on the racecourse on .the afternoon of the race. It was stated by the police tiiat thd matter ira» done quite openly, two constables making beta with the defendant, in which, by. the way, they lost. Counsel said there was no gain to the defendant. He was merely acting for the committee in endeavour to increase public interest In what was an important athletic event. There was no secrecy in tho matter} the defendant "calling his trade" in a loud voice. "That ia surely reminiscent of old racecourse practices," suggested the Magistrate, but counsel remarked that there was no call of odds. It wW further suggested that the practice was common in connexion with motorcycle events, and there ws» a popular idea that sweepstakes conducted on a racecourse were not. a contravention of the law. Ho asked the Bench to treat the matter' as being merely in the nature of a warning for the future, and to deal leniently with tbo defendant. The Magistrate said he thought there had been sufficient prosecutions in various parts of the Dominion for broaches of the Claming Act for people to know'what the law was. He, however. hould take a lenient view, of tho '•as( , ::pci impose a fine of £3 (costs ?. J ).
