Professor W. H. Hobbs the geologist of the University of Michigan has sent from Manila a remarkable, story of a sort of Robinson. Crusoe ha aison 3D- • lblftnd. H© lias found Captain Leander West living sm the only white-man at Kusai Island, one of the Caroline Group, where he was wrecked in hi 9 barque, the Horatio, twenty years ago. Tho story is that -West was befriended by a_ native chief, and ■ admitted to the iribe. but, although his life on the island has been tolerable among, the- friendly natives, he wishes to return to the United. States. Only five ships call at the island in a year, all of them Japanese, and Captain s West has not been able to obtain a passage in any one of them. He has been paralysed for nearly two years, and unable to work, but he is being generously supported by the natives, and it is hoped that Professor Hobos's recommendations to the American Government will lead to his being rescued and restored to his homeland. •
