The strikers then fired five shots at the police, who replied with a volley. Two strikers were killed and a police officer and two men injured. A SERIOUS AFFRAY. POLICE KILL STRIKERS. The police are Warning all cyclists and others that they will bo stopped at night/ OWing to the increased use of dynamite, and emphasise the conseauences of disobeying orders. Captfiin Fulford, District Commander of Police on the East Rand, says officially that a Bok&burg commando, 200 strong and headed by a red flag, apparently contemplated an attack On the gaol. With ft view to releasing their comrades who were recently arrested. After the affray the police went up and ordered the commando to disperse. In reply the commando ww ordered forward. Captain Fulford tan to the side-walk and ordered a baton charge, which was carried out by mounted troops. The commando met the police, cheering and ' showering stones and rocks. As the road was asphalted, it was clear the strikers had previously filled their pockets with stones. The strikers were armed with clubs ahd stick*. Toward Boksburg Lake the police j met a further shower of l stones and J pistol filiate. Thirty foot police arrived ! and lined across the main street with ! fixed bayonets. "Then fite or six re- | volver shots were fired in my direction," said Captain Fulford. "I ordered the firing section from the lorry to reply, with a view to' Stopping further firing. The strikers fired out of tho darkness, from the direction of the open veld. When calm was restored. a light showed that two men of the commando had been shot and another bayoneted, making three killed. Their namis were Ackerman, Krause, and Terblanche." In response to an urgent call for reinforcements, Boksburg North sent two lorries with troops and foot police. Six arrests were made. Three constables were token to the hospital. j Captain Fulford says he had to deal with an entire commando with only three troops of police. He expresses the opinion that if martial law is not declared there will be further considerable loss of life. Particulars of minor casualties have not been received.
