NEW BRIGHTON.

The New Brighton Borough Council met last night. Present—The .Mayor (Mr J. , Gamble), Ore. F.- Sinoook, J. Scott, A. Hulme, E. A. Langford, F. Ward, J< W. Bissett, W. Bellamy, and F. Mwirson. The Finance Committee- recommended that the street numbering be from north to south and east to west, odd numbers on left; that the North Beach Burgesses' Association ! be advised that ia rogard to Berry street track that no permanent grant of a atrip of land was ever asked for or granted, and that permission to make such track be r«1 fused; that monthly permits be granted to fish haw kens, excluding Sea View road and Ejsplanade from' Hawke street to Beresford street.—Adopted, The Works Committee recommended that a letter of thanks be sent to Messrs Lawrence \ and Hawker for their ground for tree planting at the end; of Union street; that a portion of the fence around the Esplanade enclosures -be renewed, wire being used in place of skirting boards; that the draft specification for tree-felling on Brighton terrace be approved, and"~that Crß. Langford,_ Scott, Bellamy, l and the overseer'be appointed to inspect the proposed work and given, power to act; that pipes be laid across Brighton terrace to the Pier to carry off stagnant water from the dead end of the channel; that the action:of the Special Committee in accepting the advioe of Mr Freeman to run the water from the south side of Bowhill road to the north side?at Hucks's corner, be approved; that the North Beach and Waimairi Burgesses' Association be informed that the Council will not allow the proposed wire netting road and fence on North Beach traok to be erected; that regulations regarding campers be striotly enforced.— Adopted. * The By-laws Committee reported that 10 building permits had been issued during the past fortnight, value £3055, making a total of 18 granted to date, having an aggregate value of £17,775.— Adopted. Correspondence from the St. John Ambulance Association regarding a grant, waa referred to the Finance Committee.

The. Tramway Board stated that on the question of installing a signal at the tram 'bridge the. Board was obtaining information from the Bailway Department in the matter. In accordance with the information received from Williams, end Holmes it was decided to accept the dedication of the Berry street extension. The invitation from the Power Boat Crab to be present at ife opening function on Saturday next was accepted. Mr A. W. Jones stated that he had building immediately Are stops at the comer of Bowhill road and Esplanade, and was sinking a deep well as * water' supply. He desired information in regard to levels at that particular spot. It was decided to inform Mr Jones that the' present levels must be regarded as permanent. It was decided..to accept with regret the resignation of Mr C. W. Sherwood, Superintendent of the Fire Brigade, and to forward him a letter conveying the thanks of the Council for his past services. The appointment of a superintendent to fill the vacancy was left in the hands of the Fire Brigade Committee. The Health Department drew attention to several properties in .North Brighton where defective drainage existed, and requested the Council to have the by-laws complied with. It was decided to carry out the wishes of the Department. In reply to Cr. Langford the llayor stated that the original idea of holding;, an art union and gala carnival at Christmas and New Year had been abandoned. Cr. Scott made reference to the wery unsatisfactory condition of George street, and the Mayor promised that it would receive immediate attention. Cr. Muirson reported upon the recent conference of the Municipal Association.
