ASHLEY. ! The Ashley County Council met at Loburn on Thursday. Prisent-Cre. Hugh Ensor (chairman), Barwell, Bennett, Dawson, Mil ler, O'Ha'.loran, and Philpott. . It was hoped that the unammous vote of the conference against Highways Bill would go iar to prevent the introduction of the Bill to the House.The chairman's approval was heartily endorsed by members in the matter of the proposal of the oonference that subsidies on rates should be increased to 10si in the £, a:r.d be expended on the main traffic roads ol the counties. It was recognised that these roads wore very different from the proposed national highways. , The chairman was thanked for his report, and with regard to the Hospital levy, it was decided to forward that Council s remit to local bodies within the North Canterbury Hospitsil Board's district. It was reported that the Assessment Court for the Ashley County would sit on the 17th inst., and the olerk was instructed to secure such information as the assessor, Mr D. K. Hutchison, would require. Cr Miller reported on the conference witn regard to tho Rangiora Maternity Home. The Council could not see its way to join uj a Queen Carnival as proposed, and decided to make a canvass for its share. Crs. Miller, and Dawson would be the delegates to the conference on Tuesday next. The olerk reported he had been advised by the resident engineer, Christohurch, that all the timber for the Garry bridge was now stacked, and would be brought from Sydney by the next available boat for Lyttelton. It was decided to ask tho engineer to have it railed to Ashley, and hauled to the east bank at the bridge site. _ _ A report on.tho frontage of the Station?road, opposite Mr Paraham's homestead, was considered, and it was deoided to oall tenders at once for cutting the gorso and broom, preliminary to ploughing. Approach fencing was authorised: at" the K&retu bridge, and at the west end of the Okuku bridge. The grading of No. 1 road was considered, and some preparatory gorae clearing was requested to be done. The/ olerk reported on work at Barwell's Gully, and a coinmittee was appointed to arrftnge for i whatever shingling would b# required. Smith, F. Stanbury, and G.. Eaton.i , On the proposal of the chairman a motion ol condolence was passed to the relations of the late Mr W. Adair, jun., in their recent bereavement. " • - Mr J. Johnston offered to sell a quantity of: gelignite to the Council,' but it was decided that tlie Council had no -us« for the explosive at present. The.Minister of Public Works, in reply to a communication from the Council, stated that he would be pleased to look into the matter with' a view to ascertaining tho position at' Cribb creek, and would communicate the decision regarding: tho bridging of the ©reek later. The: Department of Internal Affairs advised that flie county by-laws had now been confirmed. The A. and P: Association wrote undertaking tio carry out all' repairs oil tho show grounds . after the. Council had repaired gates and fencing. The Engineer reported that the boundary fence on- the north side of the ground! h£d- 'been repaired, also the fence on the eastern side, but that the Council was not committed to anything 1 . It was decided to inform tho Association that the Council could not see its way to bfear the expense of the fencing and repairs under the ciroumstances. •The Minister of Lands wrote that he was in sympathy with the-Councils suggestion regarding the conservation of scenic bush on the' Kaikonra-Blenheim road, hut owing to the, financial stringency he could not recommend anything being done at present." The chairman was appointed to represent the Council at the oonference. Mrs A. E. M. Campbell wrote asking that the Council give favourable consideration to the question of forming a road on the north side'of the Conway riveir. It wiaa decided to inform the writer that the Government had been approached regarding the work. Mr J.' Pow wrote drawing -attention to the crossing at Conway, near Ferniehirst, which had been washed away. The Engineer waa instructed to attend to the' matter. lie Counties' Association advised that the Counties' Conference had unanimously opposed the Main Highways Bill, which it exxnsideredi would be prejudicial to the best interests of local bodies, and asked the Council's support in opposing ■ the measure. The letter was received. ~ , Cr, J. Boyd moved that tenders be called for the erection of wharf shed. The motion was seconded by Cr* Smith and earned. Cr. Pannell drew attention to elips on McGregor's road, afd! the Engineer was instructed to report on the matter. _ Cr. Stanbury asked that the small grader be sent ont to the Conway for nee in that district, and tho request was agreed to. Ox. J. Boyd gave notios of motion: "That the engineer's services be retained as a foreman at £340 per year." ■ ' Cr.
