SUMNER ITEMS.

Gala Committee. A meeting of tho Sumner Gala Committee was held last night, when Mr W. G. Black presided. The secretary read a report showing the receipts and expenditure in connexion -with the last gala, the credit balance of which was £l9B. Messrs C, Benjamin and H. Buttle were appointed trustees. A deputation from the Beautifying Association waited I on the cc-mmittee, and asked for a grant ! for the purpose of erecting seats and shelters on the beach. It was decided I to grant £25 for this purpose. It we 3 1 also agreed to allocate the sutn of £6 to tho Burgesses' Association for seats to be erected near the boat-houae at Sarborough., The secretaries declined to aocept an honorarium for their services. It was decided to hold the annual meeting during the first week in October. Bowling Club. A meeting of the committee of the Bowling Club wa*> held this week, when the president. Mr H. Barlow presided. The green superintendent (Mr F. C. Malpa3) reported that the green was in a very forward state, and would be ready for opening earlv in October, it was agreed to open tne season on the second Saturday in Four new members were elected, bringing the membership up to 106. good. Mrs Glackin and Mrs O'Connor tied for the brooch, Mrs Glackin winning the shoot-off, thus obtaining the coveted honour for tho third time. Next Thursday Mrs and Miss Barnwell's trophy will be shot for, and as the season' is now drawing to a close, the trophies presented by Mrs Barr, the Mayoress, and Patron of the club, and thai given by Messrs A. J. White will both ue shot for under special conditions. School Committee. A meeting of the Sumner School Committee was held this week. Present: Mr G. A. Alexander (in the chair), Mrs Fountain-Barber, Messrs C. A. Lawson, F. J. Glackin, J. Browne, F. H. R. Neville,, G. Bailey and Rev. E. C. W. Powell. The Navy League wrote re the forming of junior branches. Tho letter was received. It was decided that a contract be let to carry out the work to the grounds It was agreed to make application to the Board for permission to alter windows in the old schoolrooms on lines similar to the new ones. The head teacher reported the number on the roll 379, with an average attendance of 352.
