The Carnival. Since tho public meeting 6re on Monday in connexion with tho p ro posed carnival at Christmas, tho nvassing Committeo has been at wor , with a result that tho guarantee o £IOOO needed in connexion with the purchase of the gold nugget, whic w to bo tho first prize in the carniva art union, is practically assured. It M also reported that the gala will cover a period of two or three days, instea of eight, as originally intended. T e chairman of last year's Gala Committee (Mr F. Kibblewhite) yesterday handed over to tho Mayor (Mr J. Gamble) a cheque for £260, being the net result of last year's gala. A meeting of the committee and all interested will be held on Tuesday. Concert at South Brighton. The first publio entertainment held in the new South Brighton Hall took place on Wednesday evening, under t-no management of the recently-formed South Brighton Troupe, ana was a huge success. Songs, instrumental items, and recitations were contributed l>y Mrs Harry Jones, Mrs M. Clark, Mrs M. Grammar, Mrs Tierney, Miss Weaver, Mr Percy Soanes, Mr Claude Burrows, Mr wood, Sir Ayers, Mr L. Scrimshaw, Mr Davidson and others. A dance waa then held, Mr Grammar acting as M.C. Surprise Party During the week a surprise party of some 70 paid_ ft visit to Mrs A. Beebv, at her residence/ "Cashel View." During the evening instrumental and vocal items were given by the Misses Tutill, Mrs W. Clark, Mr Cooper, Mr A. Bulme, Mr Ayera, and others. "Parlour games, progressive

euchre, etc., helped to fill in a very jolly evening. Senior Cadets. I'he local Senior Cadets paraded on Wednesday evening 77 strong. The company were taken for a short march, j and then instructed in physical training, oompany and squad drill. To-day the annual football match against tho i Lyttelton Senior Cadet Company, will be played on. the eports ground. Methodist Centenary. The local effort for tho Methodist Centenary Thanksgiving Fund of £40,000, held this week, was well attended and supported. The first part of the evening was devoted to *.i very good musical programme, «; ranged by Mr F. Burrows. In addition to a. number of anthems by the cboir. solos were 6ung by Mrs A. Dev. Miss Olive Curtis, and Mr E. Sincock. Miss Spratt officiated at the organ. The chief address of the evening was delivered by the Eev. T. G. Brooke, on© of tho organising secretaries of tho fund. In response to his appeal the sum of £357 7s_ 4d was received in gifts and promises. There is every prospect that thb amount will be considerably increased before the fund closes. Band Concert. Tile Tramway Band's promenade concert at North Beach was much appreciated. A temporary band stand had been erected by some of tho residents, and nfternoon tea was provided in the Surf Club pavilion' for the bandsmen, by Mesdames Leverett and Leaver. On behalf of the band, Mr W. _ L. Moody thanked the ladies for their hospitality. j Peace Memorial. I Tho competitive designs for the peace memorial (shelter and band rotunda) for North Beach, have been received by the 6ub-committee, but a selection has not yet been made. The Gala Committee have applied to be registered as an incorporated society. The committee will then apply for a license for a site, a.nd hope to make a start with tho building this year.
