A PROHIBITIVE TARIFF. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, August 15. The new president of the Chamber of Commerce stated to-day that the ! new American tariff was so stringent that it practically amounted to prohibition. It affected New Zealand particularly in the case of wool, meat, c..o<;se, and butter. The tariff on unwashed wool was 15 cents per lb, on washed wool 8U cents'and on scoured 40 cents. Ttois practically prohibited tha export of wool to America. The tariff, whph , was against the whole world outside -»merica, was of the utmost importance STORAGE OF BENZINE. EXEMPTION OF FARMERS. (press association tolbgram.) WELLINGTON, August 15. As the result of representations made by the New Zealand Farmers' Union Executive, the Department has decided to amend the regulations so as to exempt farmers from the necessity of applying for licenses for the storage of benzine under certain conditions. No license will be required if the proper storage is provided, and amount of benzine or other explosive is limited in accordance with the acreage of the property concerned. BANK SUSPENDS PAYMENT.
