yjSTS TO SUMNER. The Governor-General and Lady Jelliooe paid a long-promised visit to the Sumner School for the Deaf, yesterday morning. They were accompanied by Captain Southey and Mr H. J. jiarriner (president of the Ohrietchurch Branch of the Navy League). The party was received by the director and Mrs J. E. Stovens, and spent a most interesting hour and a-half inspecting the school and watching the inmates at their lesions. Lord and Lady Jeilicoe expressed themselves as being delighted with the system in vogue at the institution. They conversed freely with many of the scholars, and before departing granted the school a holiday. The party, then journeyed .to the Bury street Public School, where an informal welcome had been hcrriedly arranged. Thev were most enthusiastically received, the children being deeply impressed with the visit of his Majesty's representative, the victorious admiral of the Battle of Jutland. His Excellency, in reply to the remarks of the headmaster, Mr G. F, Allen, said that he was pleased to see them and to visit their pretty borough,'arid urged all to make the best of their opportunities in life. Lord and Lady Jel-' licoe then inspected the children assembled, walking freely amongst themand chatting about their sports and sea-bathing. Their departure left the children in raptures over the visit, and the party motored away to ringing cheers from, nearly four hundred voices.

In the afternoon his Excellency paid a visit to the Christchurch Hospital, and in the evening attended the Hunt Club ball. - ' • '
