DOGS, CYCLISTS, ETC.

TO THB EDITOR 0» "THE MSH."

Sir, —I am a recent arrival in your "garden city." and when I came first I was very favourably impressed with the way the streets are planted and kept, but one thing which I did take exception to was the number of diseased stray dogs having the run of the place, and the other week, when his Worship the Mayor took steps to have some of them gathered in, I was very pleased. However, a couple of days ago, some misguided individual sent a letter to your paper, condemning the Mayor's action. If this person had an infinitesimal amount of brains, he would see that the fact of the dirty strays being done away with is beneficial to people who keep valuable animals, as these strays are a source of contamination to others. I have been in positions in some of the best horticultural establishments in the Empire, but in all my experience I never had so much annoyance by animals scratching up my cherished seeds as soon as they germinate. It is a pity the Mayor does not have the cats registered too, as they recently did in one of the States of America.

I would like to say that T Hve in that aristocratio suburb called St. Albans, where the hedges oocur>y onehalf of the footpath, and cyclists the remainder, and boys play football in the streets seven days a week, to the danger of cyclists and people's gardens. Perhaps this is why the cyclists use the paths so frequently. Another small matter has struck me, too. You never see a policeman in uniform in the suburbs, except _ there is a football match on. Is this the only event worth dressing for in this part of the worldP—Yours, etc, COSMOPOLITAN.
