FIRE BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. Tiie meeting of the Ghristchurch Fire Board last night was attended by Messrs A. Williams (chairman), J. BCameron, A. Manning, H. Holland, F. Burgoyne, P. H. Harris, and H. R. Rusbridge. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote regretting their inability to arrange an advance to the Board. The chairman said the ; enquiry was made in the event .of, the Board wantingja loan,.but the Board did not want a loan. . Superintendent Warner reported that tlhe' Canterbury (N.Z.) Aviation Company i Ltd., contemplated laying down a 30-iO-thousand gallon storage tank, with pumping plant, at Socktmrn for use by tho Brigade in case of fire, -that being part of the original, scheme recommended by him. -When'the reservoir was completed it would be a great assistance to,the Brigade'should their services-be called upon at any tinfe. . TJIO Board decided .to. place the company on tlho guaranteed list for £SO per "annum. In reply to Mr Rusbridge, the chairman said that all guarantee agreements had to be renewed annually. 'The tender of Messrs Strange and Co. was accepted for the supply of new uniforms, and that of Messrs Pannelland Co. for tho supply of sewn boots. The Superintendent reported that the total number 1 of calU received during the month was 25." Of that total, four were falno alarms. (two maliciously given), two'were (hedge fires, 10 were for chimney fires, and nine were for actual lire's. Thts estimated amount of fire loss for tho period was £3043, the insurances on buildings and contents were £7195, and the estimated values of property directly involved were £10.150. The Superintendent reported that on Saturday, July 23rd, at 4.27 a.m., a call was received at headquarters station for a firo at Peverill street, Riccarton. Tho Brigade motor-pump and men quickly responded, but on arrival ho."found'the property had already been destroyed by fire. • The pump was got to work from_ the most suitable supply, arid', the debris extinguished. A Very heavy south-west gale'was blowing at the tirrie, 'and tho fire had obtained such a strong hold of the building .before it was'discovered., that if \va3 humanly impossible to do anything more than was done. Tho report- was received'......
