The track was fast, and in almost evwry race the placed horses improved considerably upon their handicaps. I, Enid was made a strong favourite far the Commissioners' Handicap, and, though ehe failed to Etay on, her effort was distinctly good., considering the fast, time registered. The 'winner, Violino M. Wilkes, is a halfsister to Cello Sydney Wilkes, and until recently raced amongst the unhoppled division. She is owned by Mrs T. L. Morrison, of Waimate, formerly of Balclutha. C, Willetts, who had won the" firc.t race, scored another success in the South Hillend. Handicap with Amboyna Wood, an aged gelding by Satinwooi, who trotted steadily throughout and won with a lot in hand. Bnshraniger did not begin well, but in the middle stages he made up a lot of ground; and, aided by the mistakes of several of the competitors, he beat all but the winner. On returning to\the enclosure the ancient son of Dictator" was greeted with a hearty round of applause. . Wakanui was made favourite for the Winton Trotting Club Handicap; with solid support for Corja do Oro Jun., Downcast, 1 and Full Cry. War Scot, off the limit, began smartly, and leading from start to finish, won nicely from Flower o' Turi and Oaknut. The winner belongs to Mr W. D. McLcod, owner of Royal Step. He was the outsider of the field, and paid over half a century. | Princess Alert led for a mile in the Stewards' Handicap, when The Sheik took charge, and, along with Peterville, drew righj away from the field, and in that order they finished; with Tahiti a poor third. St. Anthony easily disposed of a large field j in the President's Handicap, but bis display waa only moderate. During the race he | mixed his gait, but, possessing more pace \ than any of the others, he won without being j extendei The Hunter Speedwell Handicap was i robbed of considerable interest through Pro- j menade'e sulky wheel buckling when she was : in the lead. Her driver was thrown out, and i tho mishap brought Cross Battery down, be- j sides interfering with several others. Sjbri- j who was always well placed, got a , clear run on the rails, and won easily. • . Emid mode amends for her defeat in the I Commissioners' Handicap by annexing the j Members' Memorial Handicap from Quick : Match, with Wallioon, Rothstar, and Green* I I horn in that order a long way back* _. j

.The favourite. France* Derby, won the Farewell Handicap with the greatest ease in 2m 19 2-59, over 8 seconds faster than she was handicapped to go. ELLESMERE COUNTY TROTTING CLUB.
