OBITUARY.

The fieath occurred at Greymouth. on Monday evening, of Mr Alan Augustus Adams, who was for thirty years rector of tho Greymouth District High School. The late Mr Adams had a long association with matters educational in New Zealand. a native of Ireland, ho came as a young man to New Zealand, and first engaged in teaching at Gisborne and in Canterbury, before going to the Coast. For some Years he taught at the Grevmouth Catnolic Boys' School, and subsequently he entered the service of the Grey Education Board, and took up tke position of headmaster of the Greymcnth Stat* School. Besides a widow Mr Adams leaves one son. Captain Alan Adams, now in England, who saw active service during the wnr, and who formerly was a noted footballer, having; represented Otago and the West Coast many times.

He gained his M.8., Ch.B. in ISS7, and his M.D. three years later. After practising for a short time at Out-ram and at Milton he went Home tor further study, and took? his F.R.C.S, in London. He set up in practice in Bristol, where he had a private hospital, and founded the Nursing Aid Society, which proved of incalculable benefit to many who were too poor to engage a nurse in the ordinary way. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society as the outcome of a series of lectures which he delivered about New Zealand. He later went to Borneo for the purpose of investigating tropical diseases. Returning Home about the time tho war brolce out, he was appointed to the charge of the Royal Naval and Military Hospital at Harwich. vVhen peace was proclaimed Dr. Christie again heard the call of tho East, " and proceeded, to tho Malay states. His health was undermined, however, and it was probably for this reason that he was retumincr to England when tho end camo in the- Gulf of Suez. Dr. Christie, who was. the eldest son of the late Mr William Christie, of "Keithmore," Warepa, leaves a •widow in England, and a married daughter, and is survived by a numbor of brothers and sisfors in Otago,
