HANMEE SPRINGS. A most successful concert was given on Wednesday last by the ''White Caps" (the ladv staff connected with Queen Mary Hospital), who made their first appearance as a self-contained concert party. Most becoming dresses were .worn By those in female attire, whilst those in mixed attire iavoured "digger" blue, so far as the netner garments were concerned. A good programme of songs and choruses was submitted, the various items being capitally given, and well received by a comparativelv full house The company's opening chords was 'Just Keep Marching Along," and again later in the programme, "Johnny's in lown, which evoked a hearty encore Miss Johnstone sang "On Miamm Shores, with chorus; Sister Aysnn, "My Curlyheaded Babbv" ; Miss Wilson and company, "Coo'*'; Mrs Patterson, My Partners" ; Miss Walker and company, "Bubbles": Miss Aeheson, "Golden Gates," with company, and "Hendezvmis," in which Misses Johnstone and Walker acted the parts of the shepherd and shepherdess; duet. by Sitters furner and Avson, "Come. Sing to Me. Miss Wakefv made a capable conductor and aecompatiiste. The only male assistance invoked was that of Lieutenant Lawne and Sergeant Rocal, who earned out tho duties of joint stage managers. Merriment was caused by the antics ot a quintet of diggers .in fancy costume, who, at the conclusion of each item, advanced in a body and presented the performer with a tribute, assortment of vegetables in season., lne fair recipient rose to the occasion every time, rewarding her donors with a gracious smile. ~ The Thursday, night social was well attended, and the frosty conditions rendered dancing the more . pleasurable. ] A sprinkling of visitors lent variety V> i the gathering. Music for the dancing! was played by Miss Aeheson and Pn-j vate Watson, of the Hospital staff and supper .was provided by the Entertainment Committee. Picture entertainments were given on two nights of the week-, for which tho films wore provided by tho Y.M.C.A. A nine-hole stroke handicap was concluded last week, and was Y on ,S y + i n " vate Snurdle, with Private Wotherspoon second. In the second round Bunn (handicap 4) beat Mck.ee (9), Spurdle (scr) heat Lawne (4), Wotherspoon (7) beat Ramage (2), andl Bobson (sex) boat Weavers (7). In the third round, Spurdle beat Bunn,- and Wotherspoon beat Robson. According to observations taken by Mr W G. Morrison, at the State Forest i Meteorological station, for August the rainfall was 4.37 in (max. fall 1.68 m. on 9th); max. temp. 60deg on 3rd; min. temp. 14deg. on 17th (18deg. of frost); 13 days with rain; frost on ZS, nights. The past week was fine and sunny, with a sharp frosfr every night. On Sunday morning, rain set ui, and the hills received a sprinkling of snow. ' One of the largest and most successful functions ever held in West Eyreton took place on Friday evening in the form of a social given by the bachelors of the West kyreton and Horrelville districts. There was a large attendance of visitors from outside districts, upwards of 80 couples taking part in the Grand March, which was led by Mr D. McGregor and Miss G. Edir. Tho tasteful decorations of the hall, combined with the pretty dresses worn by tho made a very pleasins spectacle. The music supplied by Messrs C, Hoskin (piano) and Knight (cornet) was all that could be desired. Extras were played" by Miss V? i and Mr A. I The annual meeting of tho Springston Cricket Club will be held in the Springston South schoolroom, at 3 o'clock to-night , ~ At the fortnightly meeting of the i Wesley Guild, Mr S. Keast (vice-presi-dent) occupied the chair. The meeting took the form of a social evening, and a good programme was provided by friends and members of the Guild. Atthe conclusion, supper was dispensed by tho ladies. . ..,■». u»;„ On Friday evening m the 5 Hall a school fete was hold for the purpose of raising money for buying a piano for the local school. Good business was done at the various stalls, and about £70 was taken. ' On Saturday evening the Soldiers Memorial Committee met in the hall. Mr J W. Kime occupied the chair, and stated that the site the committee desired was not obtainable. The _ trustees wore quite willing to grant thej site but the lessee was not, lyYu 8 decided to defer the question of the site until after the arrival of the stone. AKABOA. A meeting' of the directors of. the Peninsula Saleyards Company was hold at Duvauchelle, on Fnday, Mr w . W. Williams being in the chair. The secretary reported that the yard fees lor the August sale amounted to £10 17s 6d. A deputation representing all tho auctioneering firms operating' on the Peninsula waited on the meeting, and asked that land sales should not clash with sales of stock. After discussion, it was decided that land sales should be held at 1230 p.m., the sale of stock being meanwhile suspended.. Air VV ilkins reported that the new yards were now completed. The chairman gave notice to move at next ; meeting the yarding fees for springers should bo Is per head. OHEETSEY. A dance was held in the Chertsey Hall, on Friday lasbj under the auspices of the Chertsey Miniature Rifle Club. Musical items were provided by Misses I Sherwood, V. M. Behrns, and R. Halliday, Messrs W. Halliday, and P. James. The music was supplied by Mrs Mitchell. Mr A. Olliver was M.C.
