Alexander, editor of the Tiniaru '"Herald," who succeeds the Hon. Mark Cohen as editor of the Dunedin "Evening Star," began his journalistic career on "The Press, ' and went to the "Tiniaru Herald" from tho staff of the "Dominion," Wellington He is the eighth editor the "Herald has had since its first publication fiftysix years ago, so that their average term has been seven years. Mr G. G. Fitzgerald was editor for eighteen vears; Mr Edward Wakefield was also editor for ten vears. Mr Alexander is the third editor to leave the "Herald for metropolitan papers in New Zealand. Mr J. A. Valentine, one of the Canterbury Education Board's inspectors, has been appointed Senior Inspector of Schools, Taranaki. Mr E. H. Andrews, chairman of the Board, at yesterday's meeting of tho Board, referred to tho excellent and faithful services rendered bv Mr Valentine under tho old North Canterbury Board and also under the new Board; he had also done excellent work on the W T est Coast. He moved: "Thajt the Board -congratulate Mr Valentine on his promotion and its regret at losing him." The Hon. J. Grimmond, M.L.C., seconded, and he vind 'other members spoke in eulogistic "terms of Mr Valentine's work. Tho motion was agreed to. A temporary appointment is to be made in respect of the vacancy caused by Mr Valentine's promotion.
