UNVEILING CEREMONY.

There was a. very large gathering of tlio residents of the Cust disinct at the institute Halt on Thursday evening, ior the unvcinng A the District 801 lof Honour. Mr U. -Lallott, chairman of the Cust Patriotic Committee, presided, ana the military authorities were represented by Coionei H. Houng, C.M.G., D.ti.O., Ofacer Comuiandics; ihe Canterbury Military District, an.. Colonel Symons. The proceedings having been opened with a versa of the .National Anthem, the chairman briefly referred to the object of the ijathcring, and Mcsdanies H. 'i'allott and 1\ ii. Lock then withdrew the Union Jack covering the Roll of Honour, on which is inscribed the names of the fifty-sever, men ot tho district who served in the war. ; J?he audience stood in si.enco for a few moments out of respect for those who paid tho supreme sacrifice, their names being: — iJ P. Lloyd, A. Foster, E. H. Hawker, I<. Woodneld, J. Craig, G. Honey, J. Tait, L. U\ Biunden, J. Powell, A. H. Kingsbury, and F. Watson. Mr T. B. Lock, one of tho returned men, then sang a requiem in memory of his dead coinrades-in-arnis. . Colonel Young, in an interesting address, paid a high tribute to the soldier.y conduct of the New Zealanders, and gave several personal reminiscences of the campaign in Gid-ipoli and France of an interesting cha.- " Other speakers were the Hon. D. Buddo, the Rev. G. G. Howes, Messrs R. Gardner, and Harold Biunden. / Mr J. Forbes urged the people to give liberal support to a project to erect a permanent memorial to the soldiers of the die trict who had given their lives for the Empire. He stated that the Institute Hall Committee had purchased a section adjoining" tho hall for the purpose of providing a recreation ground for tennis, bow.s, and croquet., but they would be willing to devote a suitable portion of the land fronting ihe main street for the erection cf a stone obelisk, with an ornamental fence, ana surrounded with flower plots. A sum of £300 or £400 would bo required, and he already had promises totalling £90, including a- donation of £50 from the chairman (Mr TaJott). Tho meeting adopted a motion in favour on the project, and elected a committee, consisting of Messrs H. Tdlott, G. H. Clements, F. Eariv, J. Forbes, H. Croft, G. Owens, and E. "W. Cooper, to take the necessary steps to tarry it out. . Tho programme included vocal and instrumental music and recitations, contributed b> Misrscß Peachev, Horrell, and Nankerrille, and blisses A. "E. Peachey, T. B. Lock, and A. Yates. Refreshments were banded round, and tie proceedings closed with votes o: thank? to Colonel Young and others who had contributed to the programme. The Colonel was also honoured with three hearty cheers by tho Diggers present. Mr F. G. HorreU took advantage of the opportunity to express the warm appreciation of the residents of the district ot the verv capable and tactful manner in which Mr" Tallolt had carried out the various duties of chaiman of the Patriotic Committee since its formation at the outbreak of the The Kudience endorsed the sentiments expressed by Mr Horrell with hearty applause.
