A LIQUOR LICENSE. (press' association telegram.) TAURANGA, July 0. An application for a liquor license at Matamata in place of 'the license dropped at Maketu by non-payment of tho amount of a fee, came, before the Licensing Committee. Tho case has aroused considerable public interest on account of tho method adopted, making it possible to transfer tho license more than * one mile. Mr Reed, K.C., of Auckland, with Mr H. A. Sharp, Tauranga, appeared for the applicant. Mr A. Montgomery and seven other legal gentlemen represent the various parties. Mr Reed, in a long opening address, pointed out the great need of additional accommodation at Matomata, and stressed the adI vantage of having lioensed premises under the control of a licensing "committee, instead of tho present method of obtaining liquor in bulk from outside districts, with , its attendant, evils. ! There are some sixteen witnesses to examine, and the hearing will no doubt be. a protracted one.
